Description
Negotiations have failed. Our way of life, our society is dying. Our umbra fleets, which once spread our gospel to our neighbors now can only answer blood for blood.
These aliens strike at us without warning, with the forces of tamed Gods. The tacticians surmise the invaders come from beyond our galaxy. This knowledge does little to ease my mind. There is no stopping them, there is only our final struggle.
Our names shall be remembered, as our minds fade into the Beyond. We shall ensure that much at least, my fleet will make these ...Humans, and their slaughter of our Order, a costly struggle.Β
---
Monoweave armor (up to 90 meters thick in several sections) provides ample protection from micro-meteor and hostile kinetic weaponry impact. The fifth generation Alcubierre-Mossburg drive is capable of reaching 2600 c continual cruise, and 6403 c on combat dives. Service for the parasite fleet, and personnel facilities are provided for inside the hull, where several counter-spinning sections approximate gravity.
Weapon systems consist of numerous kinetic turret arrays, including the prototype HPVR and Arcbow systems.
The Exna fleet Purity Yigg-lloth dreadnought 073 was constructed at the Tarsen orbital ring during the final months of 5863. It, and its parasite fleet, remains in service.

I work at a fairly high resolution canvas size. Not as large as some people do, but it's still large enough to fit the majority of the details without my thick outlines completely destroying all the interior lines.

I have no idea what that equates to, in pixels. Typically I work with 1080p canvas size, since that's what a screen typically is. For larger stuff, i usually hit that with a canvas size of 130% to 250% increase. Just depends on how long I wantΒ to work on a drawing, really...

There always needs to be a reason for diplomacy. Something to make your enemies want peace instead of just casually attempting to walk over you... Even if that something is a massive super-dreadnought.

Diplomats are for human interaction, and the only extant groups of humanity are being reunited as this event takes place. I'll actually be drawing those scenes eventually, it's on the massive mountain of things that need to be fleshed out.

I can only fathom the kind of stuff that you have on the 'flesh out' pile. I definitely don't understand everything, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate/enjoy whatever your are creating.

Faster Pussycat, Faster... kill! Kill!!
But in other new, this is awesome and I love it. The story is great, the colors are striking, the depth and atmosphere are lovely to behold... and I really like the way the attacks glow bright green... especially that through-and-through attack in the foreground where the pierced hull elements glow green in the wake of the destruction... very cool.
Yigg-lloth kicks ass, and apparently does not care to take names

Sadly, this super-dreadnought predates biotek, and thus fully sentient vessels. Still, I'm sure the on-board AI will take your words of encouragement into consideration.
The glowing green in my headcanon is due to whatever materials they use for the hull reacting to the extreme energy transfer from the incoming kinetic rounds. Exna fleets don't really use laser weapons, like the Order, so mostly things go boom when they get hit in critical spots.
Order energy weapons are not to be scoffed at though, especially when the human vessels lack any type of defenses other than EWAR and armor plate.
Yigg-lloth and the sister ships in that class are heavy hitters for sure, but they are built around one primary role; get the fleets from point A to point B traveling faster than c. And they need to be alive to do their jobs.

DBrentOGara In reply to Daemoria [2016-07-25 05:47:27 +0000 UTC]
Ooh! Pre-BioTek AI... very cool. What level is your AI? I'm assuming they could pass a Turing Test (otherwise they wouldn't be called "AI")... but does it have feelings? Self-awareness? (it's only important because my species have very different reactions to pure-programming 'Philosophical Zombie' AI vs neural network learning M(achine) I(ntelligence) 'full sense of self and emotions' type AI)
So the hull material dumps heat in the 490-500 nanometer range? That's pretty exotic... I bet you could learn a lot from that kind of hull material!
EWAR and Armor... good old pre-EM/Gravity field manipulation tech... I like it! I love "A to B faster than c" Good stuff

I think, by virtue of the univeΜΝΜ±Μ€ΜrΝΝΜΜΜΝΝ¦ΜΝΝΜ¦Ν
sΝe itself, the AI's present on these super-dreadnoughts (and other vessels for that manner) will start to express some certain quirkΝ£Μ»ΝΜΜsΝΜΜΜΜ¬ΝΜΜ¬ΜΜ Μ± after extensive up-time. The crews that follow the prescribed reset/recycle schedule will never see these quirks.Β Individual personalities are probably based on the programmers, or other personnel that have volunteered to be a gestalt template.
Good eye on the color temperature. Remember to account for atmospheric out-gassing as well.
I've got an image where it's false color approximation of what the Laughing Swarm sees. Things start to get a little odd when you can see into the deep ultraviolet and near infrared.

DBrentOGara In reply to Daemoria [2016-07-26 01:25:22 +0000 UTC]
Ah, cool... so they AI's accumulate quirks... I like that! Proper reset/wipe schedules would certainly keep that to a minimum. I wonder if I could volunteer to be a "gestalt template"... and then put it into a biotek gynoid body... and then [REDACTED] until I die of exhaustion.
Color temp is good fun... and yeah, atmosphere would change the tint of any radiation passing through it. In fact, you could use the spectrum to determine the chemical makeup of the glowing material and any gasses/particulates between you and it.
I like the image... is the Swarmie holding the gun to her head, or preventing her from shooting?

Daemoria In reply to DBrentOGara [2016-07-26 06:24:57 +0000 UTC]
I should look into what the various races of the Order breath. It's obvious that the tactical officer breaths something, since she's exhaling vapor clouds. Specifics, I haven't determined yet.
That is one of the swarmies preventing the *male* violet from shooting himself. Gotta have someone to interrogate at the end of the day, after all.
