Description Well, here it is - the finished piece (WIPs and the reference photo can be seen here and here )

I really enjoyed painting this one.  I think I'm starting to get to grips with watercolour, although I know there's still a lot for me to learn, and it was really refreshing doing a completely different subject.  I've seen paintings of wet streets before and I wanted to give it a go myself with the Christmas lights and the reflections on the pavement - I got so wet wandering around the town taking my reference pictures

I would like to thank in particular for the invaluable help in getting the perspective right in the first stages.  Your advice helped to improve this so much from my initial drawing and has made me feel much more satisfied with the finished piece  I am always open to more advice and critique, so everyone please feel free to offer any suggestions/comments on things you think could be improved on

As I say, it's nowhere near perfect, but I'm pretty pleased with it as a first attempt at a street scene

EDIT: I realised soon after uploading this that it might be improved by fading the furthest buildings a bit to create depth (I saw an impressive painting of a street scene here on dA and it hit me that there was no depth to my little scene).  I used a little bit of watercolour and some coloured pencil to fade it out slightly.  I think it's an improvement, hopefully you all agree!

What a beautiful painting! It gives the viewer a nice feeling of serenity and definitely conveys the wintery urban feel. Lovely use of lighting, too!

Amazing. I'm no expert, but your orthogonals (is that what they're called? The invisible lines that lead to a vanishing point.) are a little off. I'm not too sure, so don't take it that seriously. I love the simplicity of it, there isn't too much happening on the street, which gives us time to admire the reflection on the ground and the buildings around the people walking. I'm not sure if you meant that the trees be increasing in size due to the distance, because from the looks of it, they're not all the same size.

Thanks very much; I agree that the vanishing point is a bit off as this is my first time doing a scene like this and I didn't start it properly (I fixed it a lot from the very first drawing, but decided to go on and finish it rather than start from scratch).  It's an area I need to work on  The trees are meant to be roughly the same size, but also disappearing into the distance - I see what you mean about them looking like they're different sizes.

Thanks for the feedback!  I'm planning a little bit more work on this one (to fade out that back building) but will keep your comment in mind for future pieces

You're welcome! Overall I love it, it's beautiful, and I have a bias towards night time street scenes (also rain and nature scenes ) Your piece has gotten me to want to experiment more with water colour.

Oh wow - that's such a compliment!  I can't believe my work would inspire anyone so to hear that it's made you want to experiment is a huge boost, thank you!  I'm still very much learning with watercolour (I've only been using it since last year as I was scared of it for so long!) and it's a fun medium to play with.

I like street scenes too, which is what made me want to paint this.  It requires more planning than I thought though!  I'm looking forward to doing another similar piece in the future

I experimented with water colour too recently. I've been put off from my painting for a short while now due to school (they also want me to draw, so I'm stuck with graphite right now lol). But I do want to try creating a street water colour, I've never done that.

Do you paint with other mediums too?

I usually use acrylics - I tried oils once but it was a cheapy set and I didn't get on too well with them.  I'm vaguely thinking about trying oils properly, but I'd need more space before I do that so I'll stick with my acrylics for the time being

I wonder if you could get around your school's guidance by using water soluble graphite?

What's your favourite medium to use?

I am mainly a graphite person, but I recently started to experiment with paint (acrylic and water color). I'm loving it so far, although water color can be a bit of a hassle sometimes.
