This is an interesting concept. It's creepy that he's not at all bothered by the blood which makes Cinderella's concern about the prince more real. You did a good job with the details on the clothing. Nice job with this picture.

This is the story when the sisters cut off their heels or toes in order to fit in the shoe.
Like "beware beware there's blood in the shoe! your love is not true! there's blood in the shoe"
Man i understand her so much

I really adore this because this is exactly what I was thinking when I read both versions of this tale. Who is she really marrying so eagerly? Wonderful and powerful way to drive that point

This is really nicely posed and an interesting interpretation of the scene. I realise this is fairly old, but if you have any image-editing software it would be good to up the contrast and make the black and white solid, it would really improve the bold effect from the silhouette. Nice work.

What a great piece! I love the idea, and the character designs and how it all looks like a classic illustration!

But I must correct some misinformation!

The first known version of Cinderella was recorded in Ancient Greek times when a slave girl named Rhodopis became a king's wife when her slipper was dropped in his lap by an eagle at the ball she couldn't attend. Then the Chinese version was written. Then a version close to the Grimm's may have been recorded, but not formally in some book, and it has no known author. Then the French Charles Perrault version was written and gave us the name closest to Cinderella (Cendrillon) and had glass slippers (no mistranslation, they really were glass) and no foot-cutting. This is what was used for Disney's version. AFTER this one came the Grimm's version with golden slippers and the stepmother cutting the stepsister's feet.

What a great piece! Love the idea, and the look of the characters! And how like a classic old illustration it is. But I gotta correct some misinformation!

The first recorded version of Cinderella was in Ancient Greek times where a slave girl named Rhodopis became a princess when an eagle dropped her rose-gold slipper in a king's lap at his ball she couldn't attend. Then the Chinese version came. Then, it is possible some version close to the Grimm's version was recorded, but it wasn't in a formal book or anything with a known author. The version with the name closest to Cinderella is the French Charles Perrault version (called Cendrillon) with the glass slippers (their was no mistranslation, they really were glass) and no foot-cutting. This was used for the Disney version. The Grimm's version came AFTER this one, and had golden slippers and the stepmother cut their feet.

I've never really thought of that. Actually, come to think of it, the prince was never really a person in my mind as a child. He was more of an ideal. This really makes me think about what kind of a relationship Cinderella got herself into.

It refers to the Grimm's fairy tales, some say it's the original version of the story. It's a lot less PG than what you'd find in today's storybooks.

this is utterly beautiful. I love the way you use block colour and silhoettes to make it seem more traditional looking- it's almost the sort of thing you could carve into something because of the basic block pattern. It's lovely.

I'm infatuated with your artwork. Especially with this picture. In the 1812 Brother's grim version of the fairytale Aschenputtel, the stepsisters fit their feet in the shoe by hacking off a bloody toe and then a heel.

Of course they don't get away with it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dagger-teh In reply to backseat00 [2008-05-20 22:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Did you know that in the original german version the shoes were made of squirrel-skin, and not glass? :Ð

But I remember that the birds sang songs which revealed the stepsister's identity. The poor prince must have had dreadful eyesight if the only thing he could go by was the size of their feet..

It's a mistranslation from French, I believe. They thought glacΓ© meant glass, or something.

I like these illustrations a lot!

But did you know that the first found recorded version of Cinderella was written in China during the 9th century- and her shoes were gold?

Lol. Sorry. I'm annoying.
