One of the honourable ones along with Von Stauffenberg - there's a good Alternate History novel involving him helping to overthrow Hitler and then fighting the S.S. and the Soviet, actually decently written

Oh really? Would you remember the name of that book?

menapia In reply to DAK-Rommel [2017-02-09 01:58:02 +0000 UTC]

it was a two volume story and I'm sure it was called "Fox on the Rhine" and "Fox at the Front" by Douglas Niles - basically a few minor changes in history result in Von Stauffenberg's nice little present for Hitler blasting him and a few of his cronies to kingdom come.  Unfortunately there's a delay in tipping off the other conspirators to seize power and Himmler takes the opportunity to mount a putsch.

it wasn't actually at all bad for alternate history story and you didn't end up with some character going thru huge amounts of exposition over what was happening. There were a few points where the author cited a fictional history book about WW2 called "War's Final Fury" written within the alternate timeline, so it sort of breaks the forth wall, I won't tell you what happens at the end but it's a good one

ehh... You got this mixed up because clearly you're ignorant of the North African Theatre. Rommel was ordered to stand his ground by Hitler who had by that point taken Command of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht as the Oberbefehlshaber der Wehrmacht.

Due to British Naval supremacy in the Med. Sea, the German Afrikakorps wasn't getting enough fuel for their planes and Panzers; subsequently Rommel decided to organize the most well coordinated and most successful and well executed retreat and withdrawl from the continent in the history of warfare. His entire Corps was evacuated from the continent into Italy where his troops would later defend again the Americans in Operation Husky, etc. while he was reasssigned to the Western Front, in charge of the Normandy defences as part of the greater Atlantikwall concept.

Respected by both friends and foes, Rommel saved his Army from anihilation in 1942, unlike Hitler and Goering and the rest of the OKW who doomed the German 6th Army at Stalingrad.

Hitler had some very successful operations and some very bad one. The way Western Europe was invaded and conquered, Benelux, France, Denmark and Norway were his ideas and battleplans, including Poland. The way Austria and Czechoslovakia were taken over without a single shot fired? Also his doing. He fucked up on the Eastern Front, that's his wrongdoing, and the only reason Rommel couldn't get his fuel was because Italy was too retarded to keep its own sea "Mare Nostrum" and the only reason Hitler persisted that Rommel keep the allies busy in North Africa is because he knew that italy was the soft underbelly of Europe, and that if Africa was lost then germany would have to deal with a four front war, eventually. East, West, South and the North Atlantic, of course, not to mention the various air wars or maybe even a naval invasion in South France or even Greece.

"Throw away his entire forces" I had to laugh.

It's really not wise to call people ignorant while buying into one of the most thoroughly debunked mythologies of WW2, that being Rommel. Perpetuated by both sides during the conflict, after all the better the guy you beat the better you look. And further inflated in post-war reconciliation to re-arm West Germany. Halder being asked to write official Wehrmacht history didn't help either.
I really don't want to come off rude, and I respect all interest in WW2 as long as understanding it factually is the objective.

Italy was anything but the "Soft Underbelly" More like a "hard gut" as Col. Dr. Roger Cirillo put it geography for the most part, there's a reason Kesselring was still holding out there until the end of the war.

The Italian Navy went above and Beyond and managed to deliver basically all the supplies necessary to sustain him, but he was sloppy, Not to mention he never followed their orders (because the Commando Supremo was officially in control of NA) and constantly looted their divisions for supplies and equipment.

Look up Operation Ochsenkopf, Tunisia 26 Feb 1943.

During the operation 71 out of 77 Panzers and 19 out of 20 Tiger 1s were lost. 90 percent of the tanks used and sixty other vehicles were destroyed or captured. Pretty much Monty got word of the coming offensive by the cracked enigma, and set an ambush made up mine fields, AT tanks, artillery and Churchill tanks in hull down positions. The Panzers advanced straight into a Regiment of 25pdrs and 4.5inch howitzers, and repeatedly attack the arty. While the brits lost most of the guns, they only lost 16 tanks.

501st heavy tank battalion ceased to be an effective fighting unit... The desert tigers had been caught and put down.

Another remarkable feet, Two Churchill tanks climb a hill and surprised a German convoy, and shot them up as they went by. In total the two Churchills destroyed two 88 mm, two 75 mm and two 50 mm, anti-tank guns, four smaller anti-tank guns, 25 wheeled vehicles, two 3-inch mortars, two Panzer IIIs and inflicted nearly 200 casualties. One Churchill even took an 88mm hit point blank, and kept fighting on. It is like if someone copied this story, in some village in France.

Also his unit it France  The nick name "Ghost Division" wasn't because his enemies didn't know where he was, it was because his own people didn't know where he was. Which made supplies – or keeping him from getting encircled – a fun and exciting challenge.

Rommel was a fantastic tactician, alright at operations, but hopelessly bad at strategy... He was "peter-principal'd" Way above what he was good at. His obsessive micromanaging and other shortfalls just didn't cut it as a Field Marshal.

If you want a "hard charging" "muddy boots general" Who actually had some logistical and strategic sense I'd read into Walter Model.

I love this kind of arguments, very exciting to read all this info. I admire both of you and the fact you used nothing but solid knowledge without that foul language frequently employed on internet makes my respect for both even higher.

Not a WW2 fan myself but lets take in consideration that there are always two sides telling the story, having their own experiences and opinions in the matter they cant look at the same picture in the exact same way, so either fully supporting Rommel or utterly undermine his reputation isn't 100% right, let us not forget Constantinople.

It gets the message across well; and it looks perfectly fine to me, except Rommel is just a tad out of focus but that can be easily overlooked.  I think Rommel would approve.

Yea, that was something I really admire about Rommel, He did his duty and did it with some chivalry unlike most of the other NSDAP officials.

But then Adolf wanted him to cyanide himself, which I mean at that point of the war Adolf sorta just lost his entire mind.

Damn shame, But I mean he probably would've been found guilty at the Nuremberg trials for something the allies could dredge about about him.

Sweat, or effort, saves blood, meaning lifes.

Blood saves lives, meaning sometimes sacrifise is needed for the greater good.

And brains saves both, meaning if you're smart, yet don't overthink things, then you will save both lifes and time.

Excellent quote from who I think was the greatest fieldmarshall ever to walk this earth. Have you ever read a book called 10 alternate scenarios where nazi germany wins the war? However, one of the ten stories is utterbullshit because hitler joins the navy and so on and so forth, however the battle of britain, kursk and then there is this scenario where Rommel vs Zhukov. Germany must never forget Rommel and his ability to be use what little material was available and turn it into a fighting force. Ps this is a good wallpaper for someone like me who loves german military.

Hey, sorry for the extremely late reply but certain events transpired and then I went to vacations no wifi yada yada yada excuses excuses.

Yes techinally he did, but lets not forget that Patton also had the support of other generals such as Montgomery and also had an overwhelming force.

If you're reffering to the D-Day landings (because Rommel was in charge of the defences, hence the ingenius stuff like the mines on the beaches) then all I have to say was that he hasn't there to coordinate the defence because he went away for ONE DAY to his wive's birthday back in Germany and as we all know Hitler was sleeping xD
