In this weird universe, Ridley's a Dracogriff: Born of a union between griffin and dragon, his lust for power and violence led to him rallying a bunch of griffons to become his faithful Sky Pirates. Against him are the Chozo (Hippogriffs), a similar but altogether more peaceful race.
(Though the real reason is that I couldn't figure out a way to make an MLP-style dragon with this character)

No, I took his Super/Zero Mission form and put on his Other M tail. If I should ponify something that changes appearances from game to game, I should at least make a composite design.
