Description
You have the eyes of a knowing one. You've seen it all you've strained through everyone.
Every single trial in your life and every bumpy road.
Don't you know you're a role model? You modest sack of wrinkled skin.
You fought to protect us when no one else would.
You rose the flag that stood for our country, and because of you it now stands for freedom.
A simple thank you will not suffice.
And even though you did all of that for us, sacrificed it all and didn't look back.
I have one selfish thing to ask.
Don't leave, please come back.
The words spilled from his mind as he stared down at his grandfather laying in the casket before him. He had written them on notepaper he had clutched in his hand, but he didn't need to look. The words were truer now than they were the night before. A man who had put all of the other men in the family to shame, now left this god forsaken world to head home. A place he damn well deserved.
" Be strong, little soldier."
He could hear his grandfather still tell him when he was small and would be crying. It used to work, used to run the well dry.
But now it had an opposite effect.
The men in uniform closed the casket up and his mother clung to his arm, drenching herself in her own tears. He had to look at his grandmother who just blankly stared at the flag drapped over the box of polished wood. She seemed stronger than them, but then again he wouldn't have expected less of her.
The gun shot rang out and tore through his body causing the ache to rage more. And for one moment he felt completely conected to him. He felt he had seen all he saw, felt all he felt. The toil and torment of war. Thank you is all he could think now.
Thank you and so much more.
