Description The first page of the Mime's first chapter in 's increasingly awesomeing SECRET WARS crossover, submitted for your approval.

Here we see the Mime become a little bit intimidated by the din of the assembled heroes and strike off on her own - not entirely unnoticed. I tried to pair off characters in ways that made some kind of sense, For instance: all the people in domino masks are together in the top panel, Janie Steed is taking with fellow detective Charybdis, and so forth. It was great fun, figuring out how these colorful entities translate to Dan-o-vision. Some fared better than others, I fear.

Featured here (in left-right order): The Plaid Wonder, Stunboy, Joe Hero, Jamaican Spider, Charybdis, Janie Steed, the Empty suit (apologies on that one), Shaktu, Virtus, Angel, the Mime (natch), Doctor Destiny, Redd Rocket, President X, and the Canadian, all on whom are property of their respective owners.

And yes: hanging there is the Right Hand of Doom with Wolverine claws. Enjoy.

this is amazing, Dan. A testament to your own storytelling ability.
INCOMING RANT:
I used to hate thinking about becoming a comics writer because I assumed the only way i'd ever get to write my OWN stories, would be that I would have to first work in established playgrounds. i'd have to uphold weak continuities and follow way more outside influence than i'd ever care to. With all the awesome collaborating that i've been doing lately, I'm finding out that being able to work within someone else's guidelines sets it's own fun challenges.

You managed to fit (in a non- crowded way) multiple characters in only a few panels and STILL were able to grant some of them character. Well done, buddy

dan-sch In reply to mattcrap [2009-01-24 21:32:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. For me, the first criterion by which I judge a team book is by whether or not I can get a feeling of the whole group's personality without having a part of the book that focus individually on each character. Casual characterization, like.

C'mon you can have leaderGuy, lonerGuy, sluttyGirl, bigGuy, smartGuy. How can you lose with brilliant formulas like that?

Awesome story telling Dan, just great stuff. You have a natural flow to the page and your depictions of other characters is spot on. Canadian looks good with that eye brow raise too!

Well I most say that this offers a lot of inspiration. Drawing is great, maybe you should add a bit of red color, like in the introduction page.
Love the storyline, says a lot with few simple words. gold!

Great page, and that Doc Destiny is in the background being just observant is perfect. Then you have the different emotions displaying among the characters, you know how to craft a viewpoint. Excellent job.

Gpapanto [2009-01-18 16:45:39 +0000 UTC]

No apologies necessary for Suit. At least he finally speaks here (only a matter of time until he gets on everyone's nerves). And who knew Shaktu was so friendly (I might've reacted the same way Virtus did there)?

All in all, this is spot-on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dan-sch In reply to Gpapanto [2009-01-24 21:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I didn't get any cues for Shaktu's personality from his bio, so I improvised a bit. Thanks, and let me say, I loves me the suit!

Gpapanto In reply to dan-sch [2009-01-24 23:04:47 +0000 UTC]

Shaktu's skull mask doesn't help much as far as
first impressions go, but surely the other heroes
will get to know him better.

Speedslide [2009-01-18 15:12:04 +0000 UTC]

Now this is the Schkade flavour of awesome!

Every character translates well into your style (I honestly can't think of anyone whom hasn't yet.) and the slight nods towards character themes, such as Janine's hint about her secret ice powers, are a nice addition. Not to mention the continuity-driven dialogue, in particular Gadget Imp, Redd, and V's scouting mission.

I'm having my personal reservations about V's slightly impolite "dude" comment, but who am I to question hilarity?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dan-sch In reply to Speedslide [2009-01-24 21:41:06 +0000 UTC]

I know Virtus is a stand-up guy, but after being schlepped halfway across the universe and forced into this bizarre-ass place... well, that's bound to make a guy a little less than sociable. Don't worry, he makes up for it later.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Speedslide In reply to dan-sch [2009-01-24 22:57:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's far from what I mean. V IS definately not the most sociable guy, period. But I try to make it a point that he's a bit more polite about rejecting people, and the term 'dude'
... Just doesn't seem right for someone with V's surprisingly mature vocabulary. Definately not a bad choice, just not.... What I would have done, I guess. Still better than my writing, anyway. ^^

Oh, and I've been meaning ask you - Any particular reason for putting Virtus and Angel so close together?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dan-sch In reply to Speedslide [2009-01-24 23:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Oddly, their costumes seem to go together. Also haven't they been... friendly... in the past?

Speedslide In reply to dan-sch [2009-01-24 23:59:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, the pre-FOAH version of Virtus did anyways. As of now... Well, this is probably their first meeting.

Wow, Im guessing your the winner for chapter one section. Well here my long ass comment. First off, I love what you done for my character, His expression is priceless. I also like the way you set up you character as she like to work alone and stuff like that. Canadian is a good touch as well.

Wow, thanks man. I really appreciate that. Ive been getting good reviews on my Superhero for some apparent reason. Wonder if he will be the next superhero of 2010.

Why do ya like Joe hero so much? Just curious.

this is full of awesome man.Loving the personality you have added to everyone else's characters and how you have drawn them. Loved the shaktu saying 'hello' part too. Also liked how you showed Mime isolated feeling alone in those emptier panels. Also liked the touch of using ritualist's actual speech in your own comic to get a sense of time and that you have considered what others did in their entries. And also, the Canadian's little glance is such a great touch.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dan-sch In reply to AngelCrusher [2009-01-24 21:47:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly. Her isolation and general asocial personality are a theme throughout the all my entries. She's the artsy songwriter chick who sits at her own table, but at the same time, she's the fearless woman who never backs down. I think that'll play off other characters well. We'll see.

angiepk [2009-01-18 12:55:54 +0000 UTC]

Wow, great first page, Dan. I don't think anyone will be disappointed in the way you handled their characters on this. Everyone looks so great!

Nice bit of storytelling too. Mime's personality really comes across well in the third panel and it's cool to see her doing a bit of exploring. Is it just me or do some of those weapons in the final panel look awfully familiar?

Can't wait to see what comes next and thanks for including Janie. Loving how almost everyone has picked up on her glass of scotch so far. It's becoming a character in it's own right. I daresay she's going to have to make it last...at least until she can find a refil.

Excellent page.

dan-sch In reply to angiepk [2009-01-24 21:51:17 +0000 UTC]

We've got a good battery of detectives in this group. You'll see Janie hanging with Charybdis a lot, not to mention knocking theories with the Mime. Showdown like this, it'll be brainpower that wins in the end.

Becoming a little interested in the Mime here, she seems interesting...
