“Come on, (name).”

“No, I am not going in there.” You shook your head. Your mom had brought you to the one place you refused to go into: a hair salon. More accurately, it was the hair salon your mom was a regular customer at, and she had just told you she had set up an appointment for you for that day. It was all because she thought you needed a “more updated look”, but you liked your long hair the way it was. What the heck was it with mothers making their kids cut their hair, anyway?

“Honey, you’ll look much better with a shorter haircut.” Oh great, your mom had just launched into what you called Persuasion Mode. “It’ll be easier for you to take care of, and you’ll look more grown-up. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Please (name), humor me just this once?”

You sighed. “Fine. But I won’t like it.”

“It won’t be so bad.” She opened the door and you followed her inside. You looked around while she talked to the receptionist. On the inside the salon was spacious and tastefully decorated, which surprised you a little.

“Bonjour, (mom’s name)!” a French-accented male voice exclaimed. You looked up and saw one of the most attractive men you had ever seen: he had shoulder-length wavy blonde hair, blue eyes, and a little bit of facial hair on his chin.

“Bonjour, Francis!” she smiled and he greeted her with a kiss on both cheeks. The man did a double-take when he saw you standing near her.

“And who is zis lovely young lady you ’ave with you?”

“This is my daughter (name), the one I set up the appointment for. As you can see she hasn’t done anything with her hair in ages, and she’s agreed that it’s time she had a makeover.” She smiled.

A few of the stylists looked over to you with interest, and you felt your face turn red. This was becoming more embarrassing for you by the minute.

“Ohohonhonhon! Zat can certainly be arranged!” He laughed. He took one of your hands in his and gave you a charming smile. “Come with me, ma cher.”

“Don’t worry (name), you’re in good hands.” Your mom gave you a gentle push forward, and you reluctantly followed him. Once you sat down he draped a plastic cape around you and began to examine your hair.

“(Name), your ’air is every bit as lovely as your mother’s.” he complimented. “But she is right, you would look far better with shorter ’air.”

“I don’t understand why she wants me to do this so much. I told her I’d hate having short hair.” You felt him run a brush through your hair.

“Change is not always such a bad thing. But since your mother ’as told me you ’ave never ’ad short ’air, you cannot say for sure zat you will ’ate ’aving it, oui?”

Deep down you knew he was right, but you then thought of one last-ditch effort to try. “But won’t I look like a guy with it?”

Francis placed a comforting hand on your shoulder. “Ma cher, I would never, ever make a girl look like a boy.” His words were firm but his tone was gentle and kind.

At that point, you decided to stop resisting. The sooner you got it over with the sooner you could get out of there, and you knew your hair would always grow back. “Okay, I’m just going to go through with this before I change my mind.”

“So, do you trust me?”

“I trust you.”

“Good girl.” Francis smiled. “Now let us get your ’air washed.”

You sat down in the shampoo area, and Francis tilted your head back to let your hair gather in the sink before turning on the water. You closed your eyes as you felt the rushing warm water drench your hair, and when it was wet enough Francis rubbed in some shampoo and then conditioner that smelled like (favorite shampoo scent). You didn’t want to admit it, but the shampooing was really relaxing. You were almost disappointed when it was over and had to go back to the styling area, where Francis combed your hair and sectioned it. You were feeling pretty nervous now that these were the last few moments you would have long hair for a while.

“Would you like me to turn ze chair a little?”

You nodded. “Yeah, I don’t think I can watch.” He turned the chair away from the mirror, tilted your head down, and moments later you heard the scissors snipping away. You could feel the bits of hair come off, and you saw a long lock of hair fall into your lap. You closed your eyes after that and you took a deep breath, and fortunately you felt more and more relaxed as he continued to cut your hair. Unlike other stylists that you’d had in the past, Francis wasn’t rushing through your haircut in order to move on to the next customer.

“'ow are you feeling, (name)?” he asked as he began to cut another section.

“A bit better now.” You admitted.

“I know zis is a drastic change, but I know what will look best on you.” He smiled. “You are in ze same situation zat my friend Arthur was in a while ago.”

“Really? What happened?” You were curious about what he meant. You weren’t normally one for small talk, but at least it would distract you from the haircut.

“Well ’e ’ad found out zat longer ’air was in fashion, so ’e grew ’is out. But it became so overgrown and shaggy zat I thought ’e ’ad been eaten by a caterpillar!” he laughed. “’e asked me to style ’is ’air for ’im. Long ’air did not suit ’im at all, so I ended up cutting ’is ’air to ze same short style ’e ’ad before.”

“How did he feel about that?”

“’e was ’orrified! But ’e looked much better zat way, and even though ’e was upset at first, ’e kept it short after zat. Short ’air is very flattering on ze right person, and you are one of zose people, (name). Besides,” he smiled, “I am not cutting your ’air nearly as short as I cut ’is.”

“That’s a relief.” You smiled weakly and he laughed. You glanced at the ends of your hair that you could see, and you figured out what style he was giving you. “You’re giving me a bob? It was my mom’s idea, wasn’t it?”

“Oui, but she gave ze freedom to choose ’ow it looked. And I am sure you will like ze way it looks on you.”

Finally the cutting stopped and you felt the warm blast of a hairdryer against the back of your neck now that your hair was shorter. As a finishing touch he smoothed it with a flat iron, and you finally heard Francis say the words you were anxious to hear.

“You are all done, (name)! Are you ready to see yourself?”

“I guess I’ll have to see it sooner or later.” You nodded. “I’m ready.”

With a proud smile Francis took the cape off and turned the chair to face the mirror. When you saw your reflection you felt your stomach drop.

“Oh, my gosh…” you gasped. Your long hair had been cut to a softly layered bob that fell about an inch below your chin, and your hair had been parted to the side with long sideswept bangs framing your face. You turned your head to see more of it and you noticed your hair was cut at a slight upward angle and got a bit shorter toward the back. Francis held a mirror up behind you so you could see behind you, and you saw that your hair was slightly cropped in the back. It showed off your neck, and the entire style flattered your face. You turned to Francis with a surprised but happy look on your face. “I look so much better!”

Francis laughed. “Do you like it?”

“I love it! It’s so pretty.”

“I’m glad. You look beautiful, (name)! Let us go show your mother.”

“Oh my gosh, (name)!” Your mother’s face lit up when she saw you.

“(Name) looks magnifique, no?” Francis smiled.

“She absolutely does! Do you like it, (name)? I know you didn’t want to do this.”

“I do.” You shrugged. “Guess it really was time for me to try something new.”

“It was.” Your mom nodded with a satisfied smirk. “You were really were stuck in a rut with your long hair.” Francis and your mom laughed and you couldn’t help but laugh a little with them.

Having short hair turned out to be more fun than you thought it would. You had a blast experimenting with different ways to style it, and you started wearing hair accessories again since they looked so great with your new hair. Francis also became your regular stylist after that. Most of the time he would just trim your hair, but you occasionally grew your hair out a little. You even let him cut your hair even shorter sometimes, just because you were in the mood to try something different.

You actually enjoyed getting your hair done now. And the fact that you had such an attractive stylist who greeted you with a friendly smile and a kiss on both cheeks every time you came in made it even better.
