Huuuuuuuuge jump between first and second step.
After that, I can follow the processes easily.

not really. looks a lot more than it really is. the first step was just the concept. the 2nd was when i actually started the painting itself. and it's only just laying out everything with large texture brushes and some scribbles.

Too cool, Dan! I've always been fascinated how you pull your skin tones out of a solid red with black shadows. It seems like it would be overpowering, but you always pull it off so you have this magnificent color contrast and visual interest to your characters! Thanks for sharing your process. I really gotta try that painting from red digitally some time.

i started doing something different with painting pallets. i've been getting colour combos from kuler.adobe.com and just working with a limited set.

Studied, thank you.
I have a question about your layers, if you don't mind. I assume I am looking at two sky-level layers in the back, one base and one detail overlay; then two layers for the ground, also one base and one overlay, and three layers above that for the character, one base and two detail layers.
Is this about right?

nothing near that fancy, no.
basically: background layer, character layer, layer over both for any other details like the bird brushes and last minute textures. so 3 at the most.

That explains a lot of what I am seeing. I am self taught, so I like to hear how other people work.
I am really impressed by your work, thank you for sharing.

I love how you can see the differences between the steps, and how it moves to the finished product! I love this!
