Description
1965 Corvette Sting Ray GraphiteGraphite pencils on 12X18 Fabriano Artistico, 140 LB Hot Press Watercolor Paper, 20 hours
I am mostly happy with this. I wanted large areas to practice transitions between value changes, and got a bit more than i bargained for. My tones are smotchy, and the transitions are not as smooth as i want them to be.
The good news is that my proportions are close, and i did okay with the foreshortening. I got some nice curves with a number of my value changes on the contours of the body.
So i got some things to improve on, but i am happy with my progress so far with this second serious car drawing.
Here is the reference photograph that i used [link] .

The 60's and 80's were wonderful decades for cars. Brilliant work depicting this beauty.

Might be weird but my favorite part is the Firestone texts. You drew it detailed so they accurately follow the arc of the tire wall, and the text "font" is realistic, too.
I love details ^^
Really nice work, congratulations

Very good! How do you get the shading to look so smooth, mine looks grainy sometimes. Is it the paper you use? I just use sketchbook paper. I never use blenders because that just makes it look like one big smudge. I see what you were saying about mine floating in space, even a minor background with shadows under the car makes it look better. My favorite is the fact you could get the firestone lettering, its readable and I can even tell the font on it!

Thanks again. I used 140lb hot press watercolor paper for this. It is very smooth and fairly easy to work with. The heavier the paper, the more it will stand up to abuse. I have experimented with blenders and burnishers, and i do not care much for the look i get. So i burnish with paper stomps or stumps only to smooth out my transitions. I also build up my values with layers. Building them up keeps them from getting grainy and cuts down on the shiny silvery look that dark values can get when one tries to put them in with just one layer. And thank you for noticing the lettering on the tires. When car owners bother to put on good tires that car nuts will notice, i try extra hard to make sure i make them easy to read. Car nuts love little details like that.

wow, this car is so sexy value changes are not as smooth at some places as you said, but it doesn't make it look any bad by far. love the car, love the work

One of my favorite vette body styles! My dad has a '67 427 and its just about my favorite car ever. You did a really great job as this body is hard to capture in the 3/4 shot what with all the crazy sharp curves. Think ya nailed it. Nice job on that side pipe too. I don't know if you use an electri eraser at all, but they are great for going in on the chrome bits and really burning in those glints and hot spots. Good to find a fellow car buff.

I remember when it came out in 1963. My friends and i would stop playing ball to run and see one on the street. That '67 with the big block 427 was a monster! And it had this beautiful long hood scoop! Yeah...the Stingrays have always been my favorite, too. I have seen electric erasers for sale but never thought about it. Maybe i should get one.
And yes, it's always good to meet another car guy (or gal) on DA!

Yeah, love that big block hood scoop w/ the stinger. I remember when my dad came home with it. I was about 8 yrs old and he came around the corner down our street and it was just "Whoa, what is that?!" so awesome
