I've seen, I don't know, maybe 500 photos of Crown Casino on this website. This one is easily the best. It displays a vibrant, energetic, exciting Melbourne - as all good Melbourne shots do - and there are a few ways in which I think you have perfectly captured this feeling.
The first thing that caught my eye while dutifully scrolling through my deviantWATCH messages was the perspective. Leaving the horizon on a slant is usually so frowned upon, but in this case it plays off against the low angle to give an effect that almost makes the buildings seem like they are "dancing".
The next thing I noticed is that the image is overexposed. Again, usually a no-no, but in this case it grabs the city lights and shoves them right up there in your face and makes you go "Wow!" The bright lights kind of remind me of a disco, which again, adds to that dynamic, "dancing" feel of the photo. It really enhances the lights in the trees too (in fact, I never even remember seeing those lights before).
The other effect of overexposing the photo is that the smooth sheen of the Yarra with the strong reflections across it hides the fact that it's really just an ugly brown worm of mud. So many good Melbournescapes are ruined by the ugly brown mudworm!
I'd like to commend you on managing to catch Melbourne with a clear sky; that takes some dedication! The purple hue, instead of the usual reddish smoggy clouds, is a breath of fresh air (quite literally, I presume!) And again, it goes back to the vibrant, dynamic mood that a glum, cloudy sky can't match.
I think you may have sharpened the image just a little too much, with some of the buildings on the left of the image looking just a little pixelated. It definitely doesn't ruin the shot, that's just the nitpicker in me.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic shot, and definitely a fairly unique take on one of the most abused spots in Melbourne.
