Starting today, DeviantArt is completely switching over to HTTPS. You’ll notice that the URL in your browser bar will soon begin with “https” rather than “http.” This means our pages will be delivered over a secure, encrypted channel.
This change will be rolling out to all deviants over the coming days.
While DeviantArt had implemented HTTPS on sensitive pages -- such as our login and shopping cart pages — many years ago, it’s overdue that we extend HTTPS to the rest of the site.

If you develop your own Journal Skins, or any sort of profile customizations or browser extensions, please note that only HTTPS images will be served on DeviantArt. If you’ve uploaded your Journal Skins to DeviantArt’s Journal Skins category, you won’t need to make any changes. If you have a custom Journal Skin that you’ve made on your own account (or any custom browser extensions) that includes images on an insecure site, those images will no longer be displayed. To fix this, you can upload your images to Sta.sh , or any other image hosting platform that offers HTTPS.

I'm writing a custom journal skin and I want to put a link to my website on the skin, but my website (www.snazziedesignz.com) isn't https. I don't have the time to start changing my entire website over to https just because dA can't link to it. Is there any way of linking to my website from the journal without it redirecting to the https version which is not set up?

This has broken all of my outgoing links. I don't mind that DevianArt is using https site-wide, but it is also applying https to all non-DeviantArt links, and that is not acceptable. I contacted technical support, and it doesn't seem DeviantArt staff care that they are breaking outgoing links. This benefits DA at our expense by keeping users on the site. I wonder if it is deliberate?

I agree that it is good policy for using it site-wide but not for external links. When you sign up for dA you agree to terms and conditions and one of them is that deviantart is not responsible for any content on external links. So why are they enforcing https on external links?

I had contacted your support about this, and although they seemed a little confused, they sort of suggested it was a browser's "warning" about redirecting to an insecure site. It isn't--it's actually a Firefox bug; it doesn't happen in Chrome or Edge, and only happens in Firefox if the link is clicked directly, rather than copied and pasted. I made a Mozilla Support Forum thread about it

and a knowledgeable user there found a somewhat old Bugzilla entry about the underlying bug in Firefox that causes it to happen, and added a note to it that it is affecting outgoing links on dA:

this is a scam! my HTTPS keeps turning yellow due to the ads deviantart accepts! there should be a rule where HTTPS sites are required to manage their ads and are not permitted to charge people for closing ads... otherwise they should go back to basic HTTP

I noticed that pictures links are automatically set to "https". As a result, some image hosting such as Xooimage no longer display pictures on DeviantART (for profile, journal, etc.)
For my part, I noticed today this detail ... Just before I had to change all links to another hosting like Noelshack (a French images hosting)! Ok, the "https" has a good advantage with a few minor disadvantages

Everyone who is confused about why or what HTTPS is! Here is a simpler explanation:
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your session and the site.
Think of it like speaking through a "walkie-talkie", to one person specifically (these two parties being you & DA, and your conversation being the connection between you and the site). You are talking to one another, however it's open and someone else can still listen in without either of you realising it (Your conversation being the data shared between you and the site).
Now think of HTTPS as switching that conversation over to a phone call. Much more private and secure. The odds of someone hearing what you and DA are saying are greatly diminished.

for the past few weeks I've noticed that whenever I try to go to my page directly via the URL. or type a username first, then .deviantart I get a privacy error saying connection is not private. However if I go directly to deviantart's main page without a username, it proceeds just fine. Is there an fix for this using Chrome?

Some profiles use http images for off site images, so in some older browsers you will see a warning. We instruct Chrome to block all non secure content so you shouldn't see a warning, though its a newer feature of chrome so maybe try updating it.
