Description
Originally I was going to do these with the bottles and craft foam. But when I got started I realized I didn't have enough foam and I was trying to just get them DONE. So I used the Wonderflex I already had. However, I also did these with toilet paper rolls and craft foam, just to prove you don't need anything fancy to do themWonderflex & Bottle:
1. I found these body spray bottles at JoAnn's for a buck each. Nothing special about them except they were about the right size (They actually could have stood to be just a hair taller, but that's ok) and they were cheap. And the fake strawberry scented spray was kind of icky, in case you were wondering. As you can see I've already Dremmeled the tops of them off.
2. I didn't realize it when I bought them, but the top of the bottle was actually a perfect shape for the bottom of Jill's flashbangs. I heated up a small piece of Wonderflex and shaped it over it. I wasn't too worried about getting it perfectly even because I knew it was going to be covered.
3. Here's the middle section, made with craft foam. It's just hot glued on.
4. Wonderflex on the top and bottom to create the raised pieces. Wonderflex gets sticky when you heat it up, so I didn't need to glue any of it down.
5. Top added. This is where it would have been handy for the bottles to just have been a hair taller. The Wonderflex isn't supported at the very top, so it's not quite as even as I'd like.
6. I just used the part of the spray bottle I had taken out and cut it down to be the flat top I wanted.
7. Wonderflex over the top.
8. Whole thing before it's painted.
9. I used several layers of paint. First I painted the whole thing a flat grey color. I think I did 2 coats of that. Then I added the black on the foam part. Also two coats. Silver was a little harder because it was a thinner paint. Those parts got painted 3 times total.
Cardboard rolls and craft foam:
1. I used 3 toilet paper rolls total, taping them together. Ended up actually cutting them down a bit more since they were a tad too tall once I started working. One paper towel roll cut in half is probably the perfect height.
2. Just like before, I put the middle ring about the rolls and glued them down.
3. Ok, I sort of cheated here. Since I was originally going to use craft foam over bottles, I had already shaped a bottom piece of foam, so I went ahead and used it. (I also did one with a flat bottom). To shape the bottom I just heated up the craft foam over the bottle of the bottle (Without the Wonderflex on it!!! It will stick if you try it with the Wonderflex already in place.) While it was cooling, I used a rubber band around it to hold it in place so the shape would be right. Then I just cut it town to the right size.
4. Top and bottoms on. For this I literally put a ring of hot glue around the top and bottom edges. Then pressed them down onto a flat piece of foam. After it was good and stuck, I cut around it for shape. I put a line of glue around both top and bottom seams just to even them out a bit
5. The top cap part was done on a smaller scale, but the same way as the top and bottom of the main bodies. I made a ring with foam, glued it down to a flat piece, then cut them out.
6. Flat bottom one painted. For both of them I did the same process as with the Wonderflex. Flat grey as a base, then the other on top of it. Craft foam totally sucks up the paint, so be prepared to do several coats. I only put one coat of silver on these because I wasn't using them, only did them to show you how.
7. Domed bottom one painted. Same as above.
Since I knew I wasn't using the craft foam ones, I wasn't nearly as careful as I would have been otherwise. They're a little rougher than I would normally do. I just wanted to prove it could be done with very simple supplies.
The comparison image is with the Wonderflex version. In the end I think the Wonderflex gives a more hammered metal look to them, but with a little more paint you could get the same thing with the others.
