Description
A short while after I took this photo, Redcliffe City Council ran a competition looking for photographs showing "Redcliffe" or "The Spirit of Redcliffe" -- and I submitted this. It didn't win, of course (a photo of the red cliffs won...) but I still like it.It was taken underneath Redcliffe Jetty. (It probably didn't help my cause that, six months after I took this, and after threatening to do so for the last ten years, they finally pulled the old jetty down to build a new one!)
Anyway, comments welcome! What do you think of it...
Edit: June 2004: After much deliberation, I have decided to add a border to this photograph. I have seen borders on others which seem to work really well -- but I'm not entirely sure what to do with the border here, so for the moment I've taken the advice of ~optimist ...
Also, I've decided the title should really be "beneath redcliffe jetty" rather than "old redcliffe jetty" -- but I'm never all that good with titles anyway...

love the redclife jetty, it was a shame they ripped it down, destroyed the history, i like it cause it had to be on film, when the jetty was there digital wasnt really big or around. i no longer live in scarbrough, but i do miss the cliff!

Thanks.
It didn't win because the judges were a bunch of no-talnet, unimaginative hacks who wouldn't know art if it kicked 'em in the ... *ahem*
(No, I'm not bitter! )
Truthfully, I really don't think it would have suited their purposes...

I can't believe I never saw the original. Well, I like the title. And the border works very well, too, as there is it wraps a simple, completing square around the pinched mirrored cubic look. As a photo it's also great, I'm sure if you weren't off twenty paces thematically you would've won.

Hey Matt, long time no see. (I considered asking about the name change, but common sense prevailed -- and I went 'n read your journal entry on the subject instead! )
I'm glad you like this. I'm actually planning on submitting a couple more photos in the near future -- images I've found while going through my boxes (and boxes) of prints looking for stuff to add to my stock account. I shall definitely be putting more thought into presentation from now on...
"off twenty paces thematically"
Well, I prefer to think of it as being their total lack of vision and imagination -- but maybe that's just me!
Cheers,

Good! I look forward to seeing more from you.
Hah and yes, your entry was probably more involved than any of them.

very cool tunnel effect here
to the border question: i would use a white border, about 100 px on each side, and a 1 px black border around the photo itself...
the colors are very strong here, i like the difference between the water and the manmade tunnel

PS: Just thought I'd let you know I've added a border to my jetty photo pretty much according to your guidelines, if you're interested.

Nope, didn't get wet, I was high and dry on the beach... You have got me wondering, though: I don't know if I've been under the new jetty since it was built...

oh man, the last time I was under that old jetty I nearly got stung by a bloody huge jelly fish with 2 meter long tentacles....
great shot!

I wasn't too concerned about going under the jetty -- but I wouldn't go in the water! I've seen the jellyfish jostling for elbow room some days!

Wow, this is neat! I couldn't tell what exactly I was looking at at first, but I think that it adds to the picture. It's very unique! You caught some really good detail and the different hues in the ripples of water are great! Good job!

wow, that is a great perspective shot. much of what i think of it has already been said in the other comments. Except what the hell are those people sitting on? I don't see anything between any of the other pillars.?
contest or not, that is a great idea for a photo.

Interesting. Reminds me of one of those recursive TV effects, picture within picture within picture.
That blurred post in the foreground throws off my sense of depth a bit though... I think I would have tried to keep the focus close and let the background (end of the tunnel) go a bit fuzzy instead. That's just me though... 'Tis a very cool shot!
