Description Yes, you read that right - an atomic recoilless rifle. Probably one of the most ridiculous developments by the nuke-crazy DoD in the 1960s, it was withdrawn from service upon concluding that if ever actually fired, the blast would envelope the firing crew as well. Gee, ya think?

The Davy Crockett, proof that America could be recklessly foolhardy at times. Β That God we never had to use one of these things outside of testing.

Does anyone else think it's a very bad idea to have soldiers going around with such easily portible Nuclear weapons? it always gives me the shivers whenever I think of the DoD's absolute lunacy in the 1950s

I remember when Modern Marvels did an episode dedicated to failed inventions and the nuke rifle was just one of many that made the cut. The weapon had an effective firing range of about 7.5 kilometers but the resulting fallout would have been nasty for the firing crew if they were stupid enough to be downwind of the blastzone. Cool idea, but too hair-brained to be tactically effective.

I guess if it didn't kill you outright, it'd have killed you after a while, anyway...

...

Does make you think what the military all over the world were thinking, doesn't it? I mean, atomic torpedoes, atomic artillery shells, atomic depth charges, atomic self-destruct charges, atomic interceptor missiles...

Well, I guess they were more carefree when it came to nukes back then. "Hey, nuclear weapons are just like any other bomb! Only bigger, and with cooler looking explosions!"

Hey, they were!! Before the "Castle Bravo" test (February 28, 1954), most military thought the atomic scenario just being the logical next step after the destructive fire bombing from the Second World War, and that all the claims about 'worldwide harm and death' were only exaggerations...

And yet still they did tests like the one for the AIM-2 (MB-1) Genie nuclear interceptor missile - in that case, there actually were volunteers right underneath the blast spot to prove it wouldn't have any 'harmful effects' if it ever were to be fired over populated areas...!!

Featured in the game Metal Gear Solid 3.

It was supposed to be fired only after the crew dug a trench to duck in.

However, I find the Idea of a nuclear hand grenade better, and more entertaining.

Yep, Aberdeen ordinance museum. And thanks for the info, too.

A nuclear hand grenade? Now that would've made for some interesting use...

Yeah, I watched a show on the history channel awhile back with the davey crocket in it.

and they said that the hand grenade was the next bad idea for a nuclear device.
