Bangkok, Thailand - Central World Shopping Center

A section of the shopping mall was severely damaged by fire during the 2010 Red Shirt protests. Construction has been ongoing for more than a year, and surrounding it is a tall safety fence. From the very beginning they have been hanging various signs that make motivational or inspirational statements. Things like, "We will be back" and "Everyone should learn to get along with each other peacefully."

Then one day I noticed this bright pink banner, with white lettering. For those that don't know, it is a famous line from the movie "Full Metal Jacket" and over time has become popular as a somewhat joking yet derogatory quote that is intended to stereotype Asian women.

Imagine my shock when I saw this. Clearly the shopping center was wanting to send a welcoming message to its consumers, but obviously had no idea how it is received in some parts of the Western world. It is a shining example of how Thailand tries very hard to look sophisticated and worldly, but really has no clue.
