Background:
Nathan Hart was an Anchorage War Veteran who participated in both the Annexation of Canada and the Anchorage Reclamation Campaign under General Chase. Due to the horrible acts he'd witnessed in that war, he slowly became a hardcore smoker and drinker to deal with the pain, eventually asking for an honorable discharge after the Battle for Anchorage due to his son's birth.
After this, Nate became a cop for the small community of Sanctuary Hills, north of Concord. On the day the Bombs fell, Nate, his wife Aurora and his son Shaun were admitted into the nearby Vault 111, where he was cryogenically frozen for 210 years, when he woke up to see his wife dead and his son lost.Personality:
Nate is not a loner. He does generally prefer to travel alone, but is not reclusive and does not try to shelter from society, prefering to live with the settlers in Sanctuary rather than in the Wild. that said, He is quite hopeful about Humanity even though the majority of the people have turned to raiding and looting in the wake of the Nuclear Apocalypse. This Hopeful nature, added to his sense of duty, drove him to take Preston's offer and become the General of the Minutemen, eventually turning them from a Militia into a working military force.
Perhaps due to his history, Nate has an addiction to Smoking and Alcohol, though that has decreased in the months after he left vault 111. After looking through Kellogg's memories, Nate grew an Addiction to Jet too, and Psycho, a drug he was already familiar with back in the War.Nate has a good Standing with the Railroad, having employed their help to build the Teleportation device he used to travel to the Institute (add to that the fact his wife, Aurora Hart, is a member of the Minutemen, even though she doesn't know about Nate's identityA Secret unknown to the majority of the Commonwealth, Nate Hart is in fact, a Synth. The Real Nate Hart was killed by the Mercenary Kellogg after taking Shaun from his body. As an Experiment that was supposed to prove whether or not a Synth Unit, designation X4-03 was qualified to become a Courser or not, This Synth was placed in the Vault about five weeks before the manual override of the Cryogenic Vaults. For this, The Institute performed a Memory Wipe on Kellogg, Nate, and Aurora in order to make the even more authentic. After Nate's return to the Institute, his recall code was read and he was programmed as a Courser. Of course, in a few weeks, Aurora Hart (who had become a Railroad Agent after waking up) told the Minutemen about his Recall Code, and he was reclaimed in a failed operation that ended up making the Brotherhood, The Institute, and the Minutemen enemies.
