Description
I think that photography is seeing the moments as they happen, and catching them before they are gone. Life goes by so quickly... even in my short time on this planet I've realized that what is here today is gone tomorrow. So through my photography, I want to try and remember the good things in my life, so that when all is said and done, I will have honored the people who have made everything worthwhile. This photo is an impromptu portrait of the daughter of a friend of my dad's... saw this kid in the backyard trying to do cartwheels like her sister. Wacky kid

As the last two comments have said, this picture jumps out at the viewer. The colors are very natural, and that smile looks so bright... It makes me smile.

Thank you for the feedback Torupan . I liked the original color version of this but I often feel that less is more, hence the desaturation.

I was browsing through your gallery (congrats on the DD!) and this image jumped out at me. I don't know what makes it so appealing to me, but I absolutely love it.

you know..i went to your gallery, and out of the entire first page, this is the picture that stood out. perhaps because 90% of the photography i've been seeing lately has been depressing, angry, serious, or whatever, the smile just caught my eye. i really love this. i love smiles, and this is a great one ^_^

hahaha, thank you . Unfortunately, the dad didn't seem to share my enthusiasm about the pics. For me, it's a big deal when I feel as if I've captured something genuine about somebody I have photographed; but it is humbling to remember that just because something weighs heavily upon your own conscience and thought, it may not be as important to them as it is to you.
But the reward is in the interaction with the subject, and feelin that you know them better afterwards.

The dad didn't like the idea of you taking the pics? I guess if I were a father..I would question anyone who wanted to put my little girl's picture on the internet...

Hey, don't even joke about that. I would never take pics of someone's kids without the parent's permission, and I always go out of my way to involve the parents in the picture taking process. I got permission from the father, it's just that when I showed the pics to him he regarded the pics as amusing... to him it wasn't a big deal. Prob cuz he sees his kid's smile every day, so this is something that is not new to him.
I am a bit offended that you would phrase your response to my post in this way. I won't even try to defend myself, because there's no way that one can read "I would question anyone who wanted to put my little girl's picture on the internet" and not see me as a villain. Phrase that way, yeah, that's how it is going to make me look.
I never, ever take pictures of someone's kids without their consent and involvement. I also go out of my way to mail prints of the photos to the parents, if they ever contact me after I take the photos. It makes me feel bad that you have questioned my integrity by phrasing your sentence this way.

What it comes down to is that in street photography, or any photography of spontaneous nature, there will always be questions that regard whether it is within the photographer's rights to share the images with others. Marc Ribould's image of the anti-Vietnam war veteran holding up a daisy against the bayonet of a soldier's gun. Sebastiao Salgado's images of the children of the impoverished countries he has visited. What they do is document these people... perhaps they do not want to be documented, perhaps they do not want their stories told; and indeed I sincerely doubt that any of these photographers ever explicitly ask permission of their subjects. What matters is that they endeavor to tell the story of their subjects, and in this I feel that photography gives as much back as it takes by necessity of the medium.
At the end of the day, it is a tradeoff. I make no claim to have asked the permission of everybody in my gallery whether I may post their picture on the internet. I will leave this debate to those who would want to argue it.
In my mind, photography is a way to honor the people who have stepped into your life, however briefly, and left a mark. I do not doubt that photography can be used by bad people with bad intentions, but I think it shows in the work of the photographer where his mind is. I hope that my work shows that I have nothing but unconditional love for the people that I photograph.
Apologies if this was long-winded; I doubt that you intended to make me feel bad, or that you were even very serious in your comment. In hindsight, I was probably overdefensive. But the subject is one that will always come up in photojournalism, and I would like to take this time to put in my perspective.

I didn't mean it that way and I'm not even going to get into it because you should know better than that. I NEVER thought that you would do something like that.

Thanks man!! I prescribe to the belief that less is more, both in terms of composition and oftentimes in terms of colors. I love photographers whose' work is more colorful, but I've found that many of my works have more muted and subtle colors.
