Description
Something I drew a few weeks ago, but have saved up for today.Happy St George's Day!!
A day to remember all things English. Let's have the English half of me at least try and keep up with the Scottish, Welsh and Irish!
What a day to remember how loudly we cheer "Oh, jolly good show!" as we watch our Olympic sprinters coming in 7th, as we sit in our comfy chairs eating fish 'n' chips out of an old copy of The Times, even when they're slightly cold and soggy because you got caught in the rush-hour on our poorly-maintained roads, because the taxes are used to give housing to illegal immigrants, while the Government sell our trade across the sea to the European Common Market!
Anyway, the picture itself features our patron saint, St George, accompanied by some of his fellow legendary friends from each corner of Britain:
Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster from Scotland (otherwise known as Jessie of Loch Jess, from Scutland in Danbuster's world); Idris, the Welsh Dragon; and Brian Connors, the Leprechaun
Picture Copyright © me, but note that Idris comes from the old animated children's series, Ivor the Engine by the late great Oliver Postgate, and Brian Connors is based on the character from Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People.
And if you can guess who my drawing of St George is based on, you get a cookie!
Edit BTW, I think of my version of St George as being a friend to dragons. His real call to fame was when he slaughtered a fair maiden and rescued a dragon - well, you never can see what you're doing with that visor down! Anyway, the "fair maiden" turned out to be some sort of witch and the dragon was so grateful at being saved from her that he made him a saint!

I personally believe that all myths and legends have some basis in history and fact.

A belief also put across in the book series "Dragons in our Midst", regarding King Arthur, Merlin, Excalibur and dragons!

I'm not even British, and I think this rocks. You seem to have a talent for textures.

Yeah, I've experimented a little.
The chainmail was made, keeping the original pencil-lines in place - many textures here are made with Photoshop's filters and brushes, and the smudge tool. The grass is a bit of a cheat, though - that is an actual pre-set brush...

You're welcome very much.
I'll remember those things. I feel my own art could use more zazz, and that's the way to do it. Thanks.

Yeah, I always preferred a funny story!
Another alternative I've been told is that George converted the dragon to Christianity...

Well, that's certainly better than killing it (though, from basil Fawlty's point of view, anything he did was better than marrying it! ("Ever seen my wife make toast, Polly?" *mimics breathing on both sides*
)
)

Hmmm, must be true. I can still remember some of the old adverts, or whole scenes from kids programmes that I haven't seen in years!
Like some old ad about Andrex toilet paper - for instance, some kid left sitting on the loo with no paper after the golden labradour pup ran off with it... or another loo roll that got something spilled on it, absorded it and swelled up to the size of the room!
And I can practically quote whole scenes from things like LOTR, Shrek and YouTube...

PS. I like the way you drew St. George's armour. ^^

Thanks very much! With chainmail, the only thing I could do to keep it realistic was to keep the details as I drew it in pencil - the rings being a series of tight coils drawn line by line.
Yeah, it's our English patron saint, so I guess the English/British know him better than most...

Welcome. We also have few Polish patron saints, one of them (Święty Wojciech = Saint Adelbert) comes from the present Czech Republic and he wasn't born in Poland !
He arrived to Poland in 997 AD to convert Old Prussian nations into Christians. Sadly, they were too reluctant to believe in Jesus and they killed Wojciech/Adelbert in 999 AD...

It seems that martydom for Christ is like the ultimate noble sacrifice...
St George was (in the original story) famous for slaying the dragon and rescuing a fair maiden - but as you see, I prefer my own version where he did it the other way about by mistake and the grateful dragon give him the special title of saint in gratitude...
However, my friend Luke mentioned another story he heard, where George managed to convert the dragon rather than slay it - which also sounds nicer!

Indeed it would be better if George converted the dragon...

Actualy, dan...
By coincidence, I've read a book on myths and legends, and the St. george story was in there.
exept, insted of the dragon getting killed, he was turned christian along with the rest of the town and became a pet for the royal family.
... Yeah, freaked out, but I am telling the truth. Honest.
