Description
This is a picture (or rather, series of pictures) that I put together a while ago, but I decided to save it for my first dA Birthday which is today. On this day, last year, I joined deviantART!
Anyway, these are samples of Danbuster as he was and how he is now. You may find some of the originals are on here seperately...
2001 - Danbuster as he first appeared. In these days, he was just a hare double of my real self, and the name Danbuster hadn't really been fixed yet. He was just plain Daniel the hare.
Still, as you can see, he has always been a fencer and his weapon has always been a sabre. At this stage, it was just a plain sabre with a basket hilt, as used by old-time hussars and royal palace guards.
The Redwall influence was strong.
2003 - by now, Danbuster had really started to develop his character and had adopted the kilt and floppy felt slippers in place of the jeans and trainers. Only the fleece jumper remains part of his costume now.
In these days, he was only slightly crazy and the sporran was just a decoration that he wore with his kilt. The sabre, which had now become the weapon he would bear for the rest of his career, was originally worn at his side with a scabbard to match his sporan. I favoured the handle with curved crosstrees since I liked it better than the basket hilt.
In keeping with my real self, his teeth have a gap in. Since this picture, it also became a habit that whatever happens his ears are almost always seen with the right one stood straight up and the left one at 'half-mast'.
2005 - apart from the fact that my colouring and shading techniques had improved, Danbuster had changed a lot from his original self.
By now, his crazy side had been greatly amplified and part of his character become that his eyes went glassy whenever he had one of his funny turns... the gapped teeth were made even more obvious to emphasise his goofiness!
The heroic pose was also changed from the finger-in-the-air pose used by Sonic the Hedgehog and other heroes to his currant ridiculous pose... he's very proud of his insanity!
His hair has taken on a slightly more orange hue that seems more realistic than plain yellow... something I decide on ever since learning the shading technique, because the yellow, when darkened, started to look green and unnatural. His moustachioed whiskers have also become a fixed feature.
Also, the sporran was now the Danbuster equivalent to Mary Poppins' carpet bag, having access to hammerspace. This is part of the cartoon thing, as well as giving him somewhere to keep his sword. To be honest, I kept forgetting to draw the scabbard!
In making him more cartoony, I have been trying desperately to steer him away from the original Redwall influence and make him more independant. Indeed, by now he was certainly becoming an autonomous character in his own right as opposed to just me in hare-form!
2007 - the Danbuster of today. Thanks to further improvement to my drawing techniques, his hair and fur has become wilder than ever and I learned to use the smudge tool to give the shading more texture. This is most noticable with his fleece jumper.
While Danbuster hasn't changed much in appearance since 2005, he is certainly much better drawn!

Thanks! Heh... in my case, these pictures were things I'd done already and just collected together in a collage.
(Except that I didn't really date my earliest pre-Photoshop-era stuff, so I can only guess at how old they are... but I guess this is a good estimate)

Wow, he way you've improved is immense
I love how your style has flourished and evolved like this ^^
Yoru style also reminds me very much of Wallace and gromit.. you know, the plasticine type look to them, and it looks wonderful
great job ^^ <3

Thanks! Indeed, my friend Luke remarked on the Wallace and Gromit thing on a picture I did of my character's road transport...
Seems I have a lot of little influences in Danbuster and co, like the trio from Last of the Summer Wine and the Goodies. The hare himself seems to be a mix of March Hare and Stan Laurel...
Anyway, thanks for the comment! Glad you like him!

Hah! This is really awesome! I like looking at these sorts of things, I did one for Tani and Crunch too... but those started in 2002 (since that's when I got into my OB stuff) but anyways, it's nice to see your improvements here you've been doing well for yourself!

Thanks, Tani!
Have you got one of these for Tani and Crunch yourself, or do you mean the recent reference pictures?

Thanks! I always liked the costume I gave him!
I guess most of the development has been that of character and cartoon abilities, showing outwardly more in expressions...

Woah! Cool! It's Danbuster! I really like to see how he's improved! I may do one of these, but my oldest character is only around three.

I guess there was some Disney March Hare influence here, though...
