Description
Because why is it St Patrick's Day gets near-obsessive media attention every mid-March, but we barely hear anything of St David or St Andrew, and St George's Day never seems to get mentioned at all...?I decided I was going to observe a day of English patriotism by drawing a humorous artwork of our patron-saint George... along with his Dragon... marking the occasion by playfighting!

Yeah, St Patrick seems to get all the attention... much to Mum's distress as well, actually. She hates to be reminded of the day her beloved Nan died. Unhappy coincidence.
On the other hand, I find that St David and St Andrew might get some remark over her in Britain - the Scots and the Welsh are proud of their countries... and yet a lot of the English seem too afraid of offending migrants and Europeans living over here to hang out their St George flags. Hence, my idea of making characters of St George and Roderick the Dragon seemed a fun way of rebelling against that complacency...

That dragon is gorgeous. Oh my, I want to play-fight with him.
As for St. George, I've always regarded him as a good guy and never believed that he killed a dragon. So you've done him justice here. Maybe his legendary PR asserted that he "took care" of the dragon -- but only those two knew what the "taking care of" involved!

Hehe, he's a fun and good-looking guy, I'll admit. Even decided to settle on a name for him too - Roderick. Something that could suit someone English or even Welsh (since British dragons can tend to be either Welsh or very posh)
Heh, yeah... in my headcanon, I put across the idea that in combat, St George had slaughtered a fair maiden and saved a dragon (his visor was jammed) - it turned out that the "maiden" was in fact a wicked witch disguised with fake beauty.
If I was to further take a leaf from the book of Rupert the Bear, it could be that Roderick returns the favour by living in the cellar of St George's castle, where it's warm and dry. There, he powers the central heating system in the cold seasons.
I did do another St George pic for April 2018, but I forgot to do one for 2019 (that and I guess I hit an art block for ideas)

Part of the Brian Jacques Redwall influence... I love working in regional accents!
Frederick and his adoptive mother have Yorkshire accents, though his otter-siblings and father have coastal Suffolk accents.
Spencer's a cockney, Danbuster's father is Scottish (but his mother is English) as are the eagles.
Thoronraw, Retsy and Dan just basically speak received English though, no special accent.
Then there's the German scientists Albert Einspine and Heinrich Schaferhund (a hedgehog and GSD respectively) - Einspine being Jewish, his German accent sounds more Yiddish, with the odd slang thrown in (like "oy vey"). And Vladimir, Dan's creepy vampire-bat lawyer, is a Russian Donald Pleasence

Thanks! I always liked the idea that they could be friends... but when I say I'm inspired by the Reluctant Dragon, I'm referring to the 1987 Cosgrove Hall stop-motion animation version with Simon Callow as the Dragon - as opposed to that 1941 Disney version with the seemingly camp-gay dragon...
I see a friendly dragon as being a polite gentleman, but also dignified.

I agree, St. George's Day doesn't seem to get any recognition. Cool to see you so proud of your English Heritage
Heh, I am an American mutt, but I know that I do have English in me, heck my last name is Langston, and that is as English as surnames get.
Anyway, funny drawing here! I am a sucker for Medieval stuff.

Well, somebody in this country has to be proud to be English besides the Normington family... ;;
Heh, nice surname!
And yes, medieval is so much more fun than modern warfare. Guns don't really have the finesse of swords... and bows are quieter...

Well, it was more a case of the princess being more of an entitled "royal jerk", and the dragon being coerced by an evil wizard (who happened to have gone for a toilet break when the knight arrived)...!
And in the end, the knight and the dragoness fell in love and they lived happily ever after.

Heh, heh... that's quite a story!
I don't believe I saw that one...
Oh course, the dragon here is a male - they're just platonic friends... drinking buddies, maybe?
After a day's playfighting, they'd probably be off to the local pub for a pint - British beer, of course!
That's if they didn't just decide to go and drink tea or something...

Hehe you know this kinda remind me of that story book
"The Reluctant Dragon" the knight and the dragon are pretending they're fighting.
If you know what I mean it also became a Disney short animation movie.
Anyways nice work!

Heh, yeah... I know the story - though the version I know is an old stop-motion puppet animation by Cosgrove Hall, which is still a classic.
Featuring the cultured voice of Simon Callow as the dragon.

Crafty fellows, fooling the villagers like that!
Tlallicoatl: This is why we dragons have to keep a low profile... even my sort would be accused to spewing nothing but poisonous fumes with my nature-breath.

Maybe... though not as if we're not allowed to identify them even if we're Protestant?
Aren't Christians referred to as "the saints" in the Bible?

DCLeadboot In reply to RensMeerkat [2017-04-23 17:36:40 +0000 UTC]
Ah well... in any case, I still regard these people of legend as saints, as well as the Apostles like Simon Peter, James, John, etc... St Paul the writer of the epistles...
Unlike the Catholics though, I don't pray to the saints, but to Jesus directly.

My mother always said that Catholics don't exactly pray to the saints, just ask them for help. But I don't know. My mom is REALLY pushing me to be Catholic but I don't think I want to be.

Being Catholic is actually kinda new to me. My parents didn't really raise me Catholic until my mid teens. Before then we were just regular Christians.

Ah okay... I'd rather stick to non-conformist myself... I don't go in for all the "bells and smells"
I have a quiet faith, but not very religious (aka rule-bound) - the Ten Commandments are the only moral pillars I really need, right?

It's not like you have to be Catholic to be Christian...
Surely, all that's needed is to acknowledge Jesus Christ as our one true Saviour, repent of our wrongdoings and follow His teachings, and the rest takes care of itself... by grace we are saved. All that other stuff is just... stuff?
