Now...how do I explain this...? Aha well...no I didn't turn him into a Mary-Sue. I crossed over the DP world with the Avatar world.
So, how I picture it is that he is the next Avatar after Korra (or some unknown earthbender, whichever one makes more sense), and Danny's ghost form would be his Avatar state form...or something. Well, the avatar is part spirit anyways...does that make sense? Also, would he be better if he was originally a firebender or an earthbender? Personally, I'd say that he'd be a firebender. Don't know why, maybe because of his ecto blasts?
Please no hate for me making Danny like this, I made him exist in the Avatar world but instead of him not knowing about his identity until he was 14. And his ghost powers don't exist in the avatar world. They are replaced with the four elements. Oh, and don't ask about the tail. It just looks better that way I guess....
Also, this is my 700th deviation! ^^ I actually made sure that this drawing would be the 700th...

Oh, I'm totally behind the idea of Danny being the Avatar, but I think that you've missed something. I mean, look at how different the 2 worlds are. I feel like it'd make more sense if the Danny Phantom world were the results of if Vaatu had actually won. Imagine 10,000 years of darkness & in those 10,000 years humanity had to start all over again.
This time, without bending. In the 10th year, Raava managed to reemerge from the recesses of the Dark Avatar & began to search out Korra's reincarnation. Finding them, she fused with that person while they were still in the womb & so the cycle began anew. Of course, without benders to teach that person to use the elements or a way to the Spirit World, it seemed that it'd be a waiting game.
Then came the 9,984th year of darkness & Daniel Fenton was born to a family of ghost hunters. The next Avatar had arrived & with him, humanities chance at Light & Peace. On the 9,998th year of darkness, Danny's freshmen year of high school, he stepped into his parent's Ghost Portal & accidentally pressed the 'On' button. At that exact moment, he had the entirety of the Infinite Realms forced through his entire being, infusing him with a piece of the very Ghost Zone, itself.
Earth & the Spirit World had finally been connected again. Now, the Avatar could get the training that he needed in the spirits of old friends from eons long forgotten.
Personally, I think that Danny would be either Air Nomad or Water Tribe with me leaning more towards water because of his Cryokinesis from later on in the show. As such, I feel that, THAT would be the point at which his training would actually begin. While he might have gotten the hang of using Ice, there's no WAY anyone will be able to convince me that he's actually mastered the art of Cryokinesis.
Anyway, he'd need to master Waterbending, then Earthbending, followed by Firebending, & finally Airbending. Those are just the primary elements, BTW! There's a whole slew of secondary elements that he could learn if he so wished.

Though, I wonder if maybe Airbending would suit him better personality-wise? You know, with Ice emerging as the element of his Ghost Core because maybe his parents were air & water? I also have ideas for a few of the other human characters.
I'm thinkin' Sam is a Waterbender with her specialty being 'Plantbending,' I guess... Uh... You remember the old dude in the swamp from Last Airbender who bent the water inside the vines to control them? That's what I mean. Then there's Tucker with Earthbending because he could, eventually, master both Sandbending (because King Tuck) & Metalbending (Dude, he's Tucker! He's a tech geek & he could totally make his own Ironman armor!) Next is Jazz, I was pretty caught between Airbending & Waterbending with her again because both have their merits; towards psychology in specific, but I feel like Airbending matches her the most in personality. Now for Valerie, I feel like she'd be an excellent Firebender with some serious anger issues & desperate need of the assistance of either Iroh, Zuko, or the Masters of the Sun Warriors. I feel as though Vlad would also be a definite Firebender with potential for lightning.
As for Dani... I think that it'd be an amazing surprise if she were to just up & turn out to be a Waterbender!

It's okay. I don't think I'd have the talent or the time to do either show justice. I'm more than willing to be the "Idea Girl" & let someone else use them.
I'd really like for the concept to get out there though, because I don't think that I've ever read a story where Danny was the Avatar! I would prefer if the pairin' were Danny/Sam, but that's just me & totally up to the writer.
