Description
'She heard crickets among the dry grass and licked her lips.Breakfast… she thought, and smiled.
Crickets were a tasty snack, a rare find in Redwood, but here they were thick on the ground. She waded into the brush and it scraped against her uncomfortably, a far cry from the cool grass up north. She moved slowly, trying not to startle the insects. They were difficult to spot and moved fast, but with her reflexes she snapped them up one by one. Her joints still ached from the long trek across the plains and it felt good to stretch them. She got quite carried away with little else to distract her and decided to make a game of it. She stalked her ‘prey’ with kit-like enthusiasm, pouncing on them and chasing them through the scrub. One particularly crunchy looking individual was perched atop a round cactus; it chirped its gleeful song oblivious to the stealthy predator creeping towards it. Kendra padded along, hugging the ground silently, her focus fixed on the cricket. She pounced with gusto, catching the insect in mid air as it hopped to escape. With a little more momentum than she intended she soared over the cactus and tumbled to a halt the other side, laughing at her own pettiness. She lay face up, and when she opened her eyes she saw a familiar figure blocking out the sun. If condescension could kill, Kendra would be long dead. A debonair silver trickster looked down at her with a raised eyebrow, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“What are you doing?” Victor asked, evidently amused at the awkward position he had found the young vixen in.
“Uhh… I…” Kendra faltered. She drew herself up and cleared her throat, trying her best to salvage her dignity. “I was chasing crickets,” she stated simply, not looking at him.
“I see,” said Victor. “Simple things.”' -Pg. 128
I was hesitant to upload this as I haven't yet finished the story and nobody knows my characters but me and ~Lily-Box . However, people were asking me if I had any more art so I thought I would put up another scene illustration for you folks. This is rather old now, but still a nice, lighthearted scene, characteristic of the first half of the novel. The story gets rather more serious as it progresses though.
Victor, Kendra (c) me.

Why thank you. It's painful for the artist to look back on his older works, but I suppose it reminds me how much I've improved, lol.

Yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it, or, learn from it.
Yes, I stole that quote.
This picture is beautiful though in its meaning. To the simple things!

Oh my god, that quote! I need to watch the Lion King again... And yes, chasing crickets is something of a motif in Victor and Kendra's blossoming romance.

Fortunately Victor and Kendra take longer than the span of a five minute musical montage to fall in love.

That always bothered me about animated movies, but I suppose they only have an hour and a half to tell the story.

Me too. I don't know i you've seen that recent movie titled "Up" but I found it to be pretty dang sad how the majority of the couple's life together was expended in a montage.
Yep. Time constraints can be a killer.

A lot of people tell me how moved they were by that movie, but it didn't affect me in the slightest. I just thought it was a below average animated movie. Maybe I'm just a heartless cretin?

No. I wasn't really effected by it much, either. To be honest, the characters could have been a little better.

Yep. Oh well. Maybe in the future you or I will get the chance to direct an animated production. Wouldn't that be cool. It's been a long time aspiration of mine.

I would love to! Honestly I would love my book to be a success, and have some animation studio take it on board. Unfortunately I would be a nightmare for any director, because I'm very protective of my vision and I don't like people messing with it.

Mmm. That would be pretty awesome. Most of my artistic ideas are initially for animated feature films but then I think about how those films normally start as books. Heck, Lilo and Stitch is probably the first truly original Disney film.

Oh yeah, I make no excuses for my crude reproductions. It's only due to people like Culpeo-Fox that I can draw anything at all. Luckily I have improved since I drew this and no longer need pose references. Art is not where my heart truly lies though, that's writing.

I have no doubt that you have improved. And i also understand what you mean by daying that your strnghts lie more in writing i myself think that i am a lot better at poetry than at drawing, i'm not that good with stories that aren't narrative poetry though, my stories just seem to go in circles and i have to say that the conclusion always seems to predictable. But i mainly came to DA so that i could appeciate art and find people with the same interests.

Sometimes a predictable ending isn't such a bad thing. In recent times authors have gone so far to be original that they actually end up spoiling the end of a very good series. I can't count the number of excellent book series' I've read that were consistently brilliant until the very final few chapters, where the author tried to crowbar in some twist for the sake of avoiding a happy ending. I mean the end of my book is going to be pretty predictable, but I'm going to leave it open as well in case people like it and I write a sequel.

Well, thanks a lot for the words of encouragement and advice! In my opinion i think your book should have a sequel, well perhaps that's me being greedy
I never want good stories to end
I think that in the very end even if you do make a sequel there should be some type of cliffhanger that wil allow your readers to try and guess what happened or let them come up with their own conclusions. The best stories to me never end. I was devastated when i finished all of the Harry Potter books and also now that the Eragon (another fav
) series is about to end i feel somewhat dissapointed but i'm savoring the suspense until i finally finish it.
Sorry for the long winded conversation there are so many topics to talk about with so many different people

You're welcome. Goodness me, that's rather early praise my friend, you haven't even read my book yet. How do you know if it will be a good story or not? I do like a good open end, but I also like happy endings (as long as they are done right). I never read all the Harry Potters, but I do love the Eragon series, very well written.
