Description Commission/trade piece for JAWolf. He's been awesome to work with, leaving this pretty open-ended so I got to just wing it and try out new stuff on some mixed media paper. Now to try canson Bristol board since I usually use Strathmore. InkedBird got me to actually finish something so I'm feeling productive and motivated, thanks man. You're awesome. Watching for UPS like a hawk cause today I get a surprise package. I can't wait

Hello, I'm commenting for .

The first thing that drew my attention to this piece were the colors - they are refreshingly vibrant and I really like how the bluish-green tones contrast with the golden and red tones. The second thing to notice are the patterns. It looks like you put a lot of effort into it and the result is awesome. From the leopard pattern to the embroidery on the corset to the different kinds of feathers, it all looks beautiful and near perfect. I find myself wondering what kind of texture the neck area is supposed to be, though. Logic dictates that it must be feathers or fur, but to me it looks almost gem-like with all the shiny edges. I'm guessing that it's supposed to be poofy fur, since you used a the same color and similar texture on the tip of the tail, but I'm not quite sure. Still, it's beautifully painted and another really pretty texture.

The concept of the picture is quite interesting as well. Usually I don't really like anthros, but I make an exception for this one. It has a mythological feeling to it - reminds me a bit of the depictions of old Egyptian gods.

As for things that could be improved:
I think the focus is a bit off. When I look at the picture, the first thing my eyes are drawn to is the shoulder/arm area. This is mostly because this area is surrounded by cool, bluish-green colors and already has a quite eye-catching pattern. As a result, the arms and shoulders pop out and draw the attention, which makes it harder to grasp the whole picture. Different background colors might help with that as well as some more contrast around the head, to draw attention there. It probably would also be less obvious, if the whole picture was a bit further to the bottom, creating a bit of negative space above and putting the head closer to the center.

I hope that was helpful.

Heya, I’m here from ProjectComment .

I freaking love the concept. I love the old style stiff figure like something you’d find on a cave wall. It works very well with this sort of shamanic/spirit being, and yet you managed to make it look relaxed and lifelike. His posture is great, the motion from his hand to his elbow to his shoulder is fluid, and his body curves realistically. The absolute only thing that I don’t think is perfect about the posture is the way his right hand curls around the heart. I feel like the index finger should point up just a little more before it goes behind the heart.

You did an excellent job with the variety of textures. The blue stuff on his neck looks wet, like I could touch it and it would leave a residue. The fur on the body is soft and shiny, and you did a great job keeping the spots prominent without making them distracting. The claws look slick and hard. I freaking love the beak. It looks weathered and distressed, but still healthy. I’m not entirely sure what the dark thing hanging down is, though. You also have excellent detailing on the eye. My only suggestion as far as texture goes is maybe make the peacock feathers, the red feathers and the metal parts of the headdress a little shinier, like the pelt. I like the way the heart almost has light coming from inside, and I especially love the wet veins.

The tail looks a little flat out of the shorts. You’re clearly great with shading, so I think you add some highlights and shadows to give a bump in the pants where the tail connects with the body. The tail itself is great, though, with a nice, smooth curl and good texture and shading.

I think the left arm is a little darker than the right arm, and not as shiny. I think if you want to go with the cave painting-style posture, it might help if that arm was brightened a little bit. If you want it to look more like he has the right shoulder towards the viewer instead of flat in the plane, then maybe make it a little darker.

Sorry I couldn’t critique more. There’s honestly not much that I feel could use improvement without completely changing the style, and that’s not the point of making suggestions. This is just fun to look at, honestly. Everything blends so well together despite being so drastically different. I really, really enjoyed this piece.

Thank you so much for being so thorough and encouraging! I love reading comments that explain how things look and the way they feel (especially) from another perspective.
Oh! The hanging black part is where I botched some beads and smaller red feathers so I tried to make it look like crow feathers. That was kinda eh. But I decided to save the piece because it was all fixable stuff. I will try to learn from your suggestions <3

Hi there, I'm here from ProjectComment .

So to start with, I'd just like to say that primarily, I am not often fond of anthropomorphised animals as I often find that they are done in bad taste.  That said, this particular piece is far more interesting than the usual sort I see, which is always pleasant to see .

And so on to the actual review itself:

First, I'd just like to say I'm not sure what medium it's been done in, but I am thinking watercolours.  I used Canson Bristol Board for some of the copic work I do and the paper is decent enough, especially for the cost!  The colours are vibrant and eye catching and the piece on the whole has a nice comic-style to it.  I am particularly fond of the section around the face which seems (strangely) simplistic and detailed at the same time.

For the most part, the anatomy seems decent, but the primary comment I'd say is the shoulders don't quite seem right.  The left shoulder comes out as far as the right, but is at an angle.  It gives a somewhat disturbing look as it seems to be twisted for it.  To combat this, I would angle that arm forward slightly and use forshortening to make the shoulder slightly smaller as it's behind the rest of the body.

Next, as the creature is wearing a corset, I would assume (rightly or wrongly) that they are female and having humanoid features elsewhere, the lack of breasts make this seem more masculine.

Otherwise, I think the piece on the whole is great and it's a job well done .

Thank you for your feedback! This was done in watercolor, acrylic and things like ballpoint pen here and there. Just mixed media I suppose. Yeah the character us indeed male, I'm sure that may make the corset seem odd if people don't know the person for which it was made for. Thank you for pointing out the anatomical flaws, that's something I can work on. Oh and I know what you mean about anthro art often being dirty. Even with my filters on FurAffinity I had to leave. I very rarely draw furries because it just got ruined by all that... stuff.

I know the pains of working on anatomy well lol.  Seems the more I learn about it, the more I find out I still have to learn!

But fair enough regarding the clothing choices.  Such is the way with commission work .

Thank you so much! I tried out all kinds of different things in this piece, hopefully it isn't too patchwork, errr...patchworky? looking due to using anything from watercolor brush markers to gold acrylic craft paint. Had a lot of fun! Strathmore mixed media paper definitely held up, very pleased with my current supplies. And a few more I'm getting too. I think I'm finally at a point where I can stop pouring money into Amazon for art supplies just going to get some misc watercolor sets with colors that you can't really achieve by mixing your generic colors.
