Description
A new personnal project of illustrating an early version of the Little Red Riding Hood ( in french sorry ), told by French peasants since the 10th century, featuring cannibalism, blood, nudity and vulgar words ... A surprising version. So I decided to sample this old oral tradition version named commonly 'version of the Nivernais' with modernized version from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm ( 1812 ) and Charles Perrault ( 1698 ). Done with ballpen and a sketchbook , Krita and Scribus.More info , original text if you want helping translate, and making of pictures on my blog [link]

now that i'm older i can't really be sure if the guy with the axe was a hero or a psychopath who kills random people...

I love how bloody older versions of fairy tales are. You illustrated this beautifully, and your depiction of the girl as clearly post-pubescent hints at the moral lesson of Perrault's version.

That's a great art for a great story! It really looks like an illustrated book. Β°_Β°
I'm so happy I've finally found a picture in which she eats her grandmother. XD I loved how you put together the many versions of this story.
I'd be happy to translate it in english, but I don't have the time right know... if you haven't found anyone else yet then I'll be happy to participate as soon as I'll have the time. ^_^
Congratulations again! The line art, the colors, the selected scenes are all just perfect.

Thanks for noticing the details ^ ^ ; and also for your proposition. About the translation, no one jumped on it , so there is still room for it. Take your time if you can. If you can't, no problem. ( Raw text is here btw : [link] )

Your Welcome. Hay, we all got to try something new every once in a while. Even if it is out of our comfort zone. If we don't, then what is art?

Scribus is really cool, I only scratched the surface, but the software was able to do all the things I wanted, layers, linked textbox, style, exports. I get no bug and good performances too.
Now, I'm sure it's another deal working on a 160 page commercial brochure with 8 product per pages and descriptions , price, photos, vector shapes everywhere , etc... But for small project as mine , it was really a good experience.

Scribus is pretty nice too. I've tried to use it with very high resolution images over 20 pages and currenty it's pretty stable though it will lag a bit. It's a nice open source program.

Yeah, there are several versions out there. I know one where the wolf eats both and the story ends. Just like that.

Amazing mood, layout and style, I enjoyed this a lot! Anatomy is not always "cutting-edge" but I don't care at all! Red Riding Hood is so alluring and charming, the wolf is so vicious and sometimes cute, his expression in the bed is priceless , and that's the most important thing! Really good work, my friend!

Hey thanks for your comment Sure anatomy and face has a lot of craps in it ; all base drawings were done ballpen almost without pencil, directly ; this is fast, but also leave a lot of anatomy and facial problems. I tried to fix them with coloring, but my skill (and patience) reached limit on it ^ ^ A good lesson to polish my drawing prior to colorize for the next one.

I am kind of disappointed that there is no "tire la chevillette et la bobinette cherra" in this version... Anyway I really like your interpretation.
It reminds me of an essay by Isaac Asimov where he explained that the original pre-Disney versions of fairy tales were always filled with violence, sadism, horrible step-mothers, and yeah... cannibalism... (countless little kids eaten by witches, ogres, wolves and so on). They often didn't have a happy ending and were not for children to read at all!

Deevad In reply to EpsilonEridani [2013-02-26 02:03:27 +0000 UTC]
Thanks ! For sure, other old tales are probably as gore or more even. ( as the 3 little pig eating the wolf at the end , hu hu )
Yes, for 'bobinette, ni chevillette qui ait chu' it was a choice I made to make the expression newer. But I also had to erase the old 'classic' words. It was hard to decide.

actually this is the Little Red Riding Hood's real story.... except that little red dies.....
but it still being awesome....
I like it at all......

Yes, most of the version make the Little Red Riding Hood dead at the end. In the real old version, she ask to leave bed because she wants to poo, wolf ask her to do in bed, but she convince the wolf to let her escape with a rope ; then she cut the rope and flee to be rescued by village womans who wash clothes ( they put clothes on the water to make the Little Red Riding Hood run on the river ) . Wolf die when he wants to cross river.
I preferred the end of Grimm's , when she 'reborn' of the stomach of the wolf.

This is really cool. I can't read it, but the illustrations are marvelous. they guide me through the story really well. I love seeing your personal style at work. I also really like the themes and colors. Those bright reds are very striking, and that last image is really bold and stands out and adds a seriousness and kind of "badass"ness to the whole thing. Really good job!
