Description
Before becoming successful Broadway and Hollywood actors, the Marx brothers traveled the vaudeville circuits for years. They were constantly on the go, playing in all kinds of theaters to all kinds of crowds and eating and sleeping whatever and wherever they could. Their mother Minnie wanted her sons to be stars, and by golly they were going to make it big or die trying! From left to right: Julius (Groucho), Leo (Chico), Milton (Gummo; note the gumshoes), Arthur/Ahdie (Harpo), and Herbie (Zeppo).

I love the work. it must of have been hard in those years. even Chaplin knew what dirt tasted like, but he was so extremely poor as he started off with his work in London.

I love the Marx Bros. You can't go wrong when you're a Marxist. LOL
I even love many of the fact of their lives off camera.
Like how, when they're not wearing costumes and make-up, how Chico and Harpo are amazing look-alikes. As children, they were mistaken as twins a lot. Harpo once made a guest appearance on the gameshow 'I've got a Secret'. His Secret: "I'm really Chico disguised as Harpo." Nobody, not even Groucho who was also in the show, knew until the end and they were stunned.
Zeppo, even though he always played the 'normal one' in their acts, was said to be the funniest one in real life. Groucho even stated that Zeppo 'Plays me better than ME'. Zeppo even passes as Groucho in the film 'Animal Crackers'. While Groucho was away during a scene (tonsilitis as they say), Zeppo played his character and since the part was during a blackout, you couldn't tell that it was really Zeppo (unless you look REEEAAALLY carefully at the silhouette of his profile and hairline).
One of my favorite thing I read about Chico that makes me laugh every time: He meets famed actress Tallulah Bankhead at a party. He walks right up to her, shakes hands with her and say, "Ms. Bankhead, I would like to fuck you." She laughs and says, "And you shall, Dah-ling. And you shall."
LOL.
Ah, those boys were one of a kind. They never get tiring. ^_^

Did you ever hear the story of the hotel they cursed?

Hmm... I may have at one point. What were the details?

Oh it's been a while. Mm -- I think they got kicked out, and as they were leaving, Harpo shouted: I hope your hotel burns to the ground!
And then it did. That night.
*whistling*

When I read his autobio, thats the way i would picture Arthur, asleep with that lil smile on his face. ADORABLE! I could picture him in that same position with his shoes off and a kite string tied to his toe and he's laying on a field of grass. :3 (btw i noticed the mismatched socks!)
I love it when people draw them out of costume, and you managed to put them all together, its so darn cute! Its so like Julius to NOT be a part of the group, his back turned against them, doing his own thing. I like how it looks like Leo is teaching his little brother Milton to play cards, that's a sweet bonding moment. Herbert's face looks so much like himself here, its interesting that he's reading a comic instead of lifting weights XD But he's a kid here, so it looks better this way.
This is a favorite, definitely one to come back to look at again and again.

This is the best of any Marx Bros. stuff I've ever seen, and they're not even in the character they're known for!!!~ xD I LOVE THIS Incredible, especially the way you captured their personalities. Chico and Groucho really stood out to me. Of course Groucho would have his back turned reading, and Chico with the cards...
Thanks so much for this lovely piece of art ^^

I don't know if you've found and read it yet, but that quote was from a Groucho biography. It's simply titled 'Groucho' by Stefan Kanfer.

chico is quite small for his age (compared to the others I mean) but I looooove it how he is already in his card game; everywhere he goes! XD I cracked up when he started playing cards with the two ladies and harpo in animal crackers because i knew he had a hard time keeping his act in the acting instead of just playing on high stakes (:

Yeah, he's sort of scrunched up against the suitcase and Harpo's all stretched out, which makes him look taller.

Wow. I remembered your work from forever ago, and I am so psyched that you started drawing the team again. Your style as a whole has an 'old-time' feel to it that's imperative to vaudeville. I really hope you can take the time to give us more, these guys were absolutely amazing.

Aww. I like the mismatched socks! And the way you managed to work the different personalities in. And the lighting and colour palette...
It's funny, I was just reading about the train-travelling-vaudeville-circuit days, and Minnie lying about their ages to get reduced fare, leading to the conductor informing her that he'd caught one of her boys smoking a cigar and another one shaving. "They grow up so fast..."
Anyway, apparently I have to start watching you... because your gallery seriously makes me squee.

Thanks!
Where did you read that, btw?

DanaksZoul In reply to Deisi [2011-03-19 02:32:19 +0000 UTC]
I... can't even remember. It was an excerpt from one of the biographies... I want to say it was Groucho's.
I'm horrible at remembering where things come from... the excerpt had the whole, you know, title info, possibly even an ISBN noted down, but do I remember? Sigh. So, sorry about that. If I find it again, I'll have to come back and let you know. 'Til then, my plan of action is to find and read all books pertaining to the Marx Bros.. Which is not a bad plan, if inefficient when it comes to finding a single anecdote...

Haha, no, that's okay! I haven't read Groucho's bio yet, just Harpo's, but I'm going to read Groucho's next. I'm sure it will spawn more pictures like this one.

This is a compelling image you've composed. Bravo!
On a side note, I loved reading Arthur's autobiography (which I assume you've read?), especially the parts about the brothers' mother. Minnie was some kind of woman. Will you be drawing her next/soon?

Deisi In reply to Same-side [2011-03-17 13:30:52 +0000 UTC]
I might! I was going to put her in this picture, sitting on a bench next to them, but I guess she got up to buy train tickets or something.
I loved his autobiography too... I find it really ironic that he says "I don't talk, I listen" at the start of a 600+ page book. They're a really neat family.
