also did rough blocking of the table + the robo arm thing + table items.
I just did quick box modeling then took screenshot from the camera angle and pasted into photoshop and traced the thing i needed.
I think its ok to use 3d as reference if its made by yourself.

i see what you mean so you kinda block out the shapes right, and then draw over the top of the screen shot. clever.
and i agree, if you make it in 3d its a fine refrence to use. i might examine this technique and give it a shot (if you dont mind)

3. head sculpt in Sculptris
4. re-topo in 3dsmax
5. switch to blender
6. rig in blender
7. unwrap in blender
8. texture in photoshop
9. animate in blender
10. comp in blender
11. final comp in AfterEffects.
Thats how i did this!
