There are two types of persons;

1st:
The ones that doesn't actually care, and think a simple "It will be better soon", cheers the depressed person up and makes the depression oh so sudden disappear. They seem to never had a deep dark pit they fell into, where they didn't find a way out again - or simply don't really care about other one but themself.

2nd:
The person that wants to help and feels with you, but can't show it or even tell it in the right words. They feel sorry for you a lot, but something is in their way to help you the way you really need it!

This comic most likely shows the selfish theory.

The difference between sympathy and empathy is that empathetic people are willing to go down in that hole with you.

Oh yes, because when someone wishes me well and hopes I feel better while I'm having a depressed spell, I'm SO VERY angry that they DARE suggest that.

It's not the support, it's the idea that saying "you can do it!" and leaving it at that is good enough when there's an obvious way to actually help. Telling someone in a hole that they're going to get out some day, and then leaving, doesn't count as trying to get them out of the hole or make waiting for help more bearable.

It's like telling a kid they're smart when they don't understand their homework. Okay, being called smart is a compliment, but compliments won't solve for x.

My life in a nutshell. You always do such a good job of encapsulating just how frustrating depression really is-- and particularly the way people who've never felt it themselves react to it.

At my lowest points, what I really need is empathy, not sympathy. There's a huge difference between the two that seems to elude a lot of people, and this comic illustrates that difference perfectly.

Sometimes, depression can have a few, sarcastic, funny moments too! ^^

I second that. It still hurts, though.

Blondythedragon In reply to M5Transmissions [2018-02-17 14:26:24 +0000 UTC]

It does, and that wont ever change, but the best one can do is to see it from another perspective, when one is feling better. That is at least what I do ^^

M5Transmissions In reply to Blondythedragon [2018-02-18 06:15:00 +0000 UTC]

... Well, through that approach one can see things that would not be noticed back when one was distressed.
Your statement makes sense.

There should be variants of this!

Someone comes over and says, "Just climb out!"
Someone else says, "Well, look at yourself! You put yourself down there! Come back out!"
Another person that says, "It's dark up here, too!"
and so on.
