A saber tooth cat stands on a snowy hill and roars into the valley below. This is smilodon populator, the largest cat ever. It lived during the last ice age, the Pleistocene era, in South America.
I actually depicted this cat out of it's element a bit for smilodon populator. It would have actually lived in a more tropical lowland in the Eastern part of South America. However, i was just in the mood to do a snowy scene, so I went with it. I suppose you could just as easily call this smilodon fatalis which lived in much colder North America.
Thanks for checking out my art,
Daniel

Dude, I freakin' LOVE Smilodons. This is awesome. The only way it could be better is if it were a pack of 'em attacking a mammoth.

Become a great picture. I think the design of the tiger has become great, great proportions, the anatomy fits the type and was carefully considered and it is quite realistic as the Smilodon could have actually looked in relation to the particularly large head. The nature and the surroundings are also really fitting, it reminds me of the edge of the sky from the world. The snow was well distributed in order to get contrasts and a real structure in the surroundings. Poor vegetation and the trees round it off in terms of color, since they are also drawn in natural colors but are not completely opposite to each other. Good work.

Smilodon. Or Saber Tooth. But not tiger. Sorry if I come off as a know-it-all douche, but I'm into paleontology and zoology and people getting an an animal's name wrong is a big pet peeve of mine. But yes, this is a great piece. Again, sorry if I come off as a douche.

A beautiful creature. Awesome painting! I read years ago that wooly mammoths and sabretooth cats (along with many other animal species) died off eventually for lack of enough food. A modern Tiger eats like 50 pounds of raw meat each day and can you imagine a sabretooth cat needing even more than that to basically survive?! Over time with all the ice such a cat would never find enough meat. By limiting its prey due to the cold, these animals basically starved to death, even if they did eat something each day as it would never be enough for their metabolism. A simply stunning painting. You can 'feel' his strength.

I've always thought smilodon's were cooler than T-rexes. To hear, let alone see, one of these beasts would be enough to make me run for the next mountain range.
