Description
Prints: fineartbydaniel.com/artwork/?i… The sun rises casting morning light on an animal that (probably) no longer exists. It looks a bit like a brown furred dog or wolf, but it has dark, tiger-like stripes on its hindquarters and a thick stiff tail. This is a thylacine also known as a Tasmanian tiger or wolf.
Thylacines were once native to Tasmania, New Guinea, and Australia. They are considered to be extinct as the last known one died in 1936; however there have been purported sightings in the wild as recently as 2008. It is likely that competition from dingoes (introduced by settlers) was a major contributor to their decline.
Though they look like dogs, they were marsupials, and were much more closely related to Tasmanian devils and kangaroos. Their canine-like appearance is a product of convergent evolution. Though they could not run very fast, they could apparently hop a bit like a kangaroo.
This is my first image to feature a thylacine. I wanted to go for just a simple image that showed off the animal in profile. So, I kept the environment to a minimum.

I feel bad for the last one, cause it died from exposer to the elements because a keeper at the zoo it lived at didn't check to see if it was out of the outdoor exhibit

I used to think this specie was extinct. I did not know about recent sighting. Not the first nor last of species vanishing because of humans, alas. Great picture. In memoriam.

Tazzy Tiger!! There's a great movie called The Hunter that stars Willem Dafoe. It's based off a book but they did a pretty good job on the movie.

I believe dingoes were introduced here around 4,000 years ago. The thylacines were in decline after that, but did not go extinct until after the introduction of sheep, cattle, etc. A lot of land was cleared to make way for grazing, which meant the thylacines' normal prey animals were more scarce. Farmers then began complaining that thylacines were going after their livestock, and the government started paying bounties for dead thylacines – even though they were rarely seen near farms and hunters had to travel quite a way to claim those bounties. Shooting thylacines was easy money for a lot of people. By the time anyone realized they were nearly extinct, it was too late to stop their decline, and far too late to change the minds of local farmers and hunters. The last thylacine in the wild was shot in 1930, and the last thylacine in captivity died in 1936.

It sucks that these animals were hunted to extinction. Nice work though.

It’s been suggested that settlers contributed toward the Thylacines extinction as they were apparently killing livestock O.o

You'd think after killing off the dodo we'd learn our mistake by now.

When people first made it to the dodo's native island of Mauritus, just off Madagascar. They hunted them down because the dodo never learned to fear humans. How else do you think people came up with "As dead as a dodo"

I never researched this, but poor Dodo...it never learned to fear humans. It didn’t know. I’ve seen illustrations, like the Thylacine, it’s such an amazing looking animal.
