Description
Prints: daniel-eskridge.artistwebsites…A zebra stands in tall brown grass on an African plain and looks off in to the distance at an approaching storm. Lightning flashes as a wave of dark menacing clouds rolls across the sky. As the tempest devours the blue sky, torrential rains envelop the trees at the edge of the grassland.
While I've created quite a bit of horse art, this is my first artwork to feature a zebra. I made this work in the spring of 2014 on a day when we were expecting severe thunderstorms. The weather that day gave me the idea to create a scene featuring an ominous looking storm approaching. I tried a variety of animals in the scene, but the black and white stripes of the zebra seemed to work best in the scene.
Lightning brush:
Tools used: Poser, Vue, GIMP
Thanks for looking!

this painting has something magical, as if the storm is opening a dimensional gate to another dimension with luxuriant trees and green grass, to a world that the zebra was dreaming of...

pretty cool. just wondering, did you make the zebra yourself, or at least the skin? the strips don't actually go around the belly.
but everything else is done beautifully. good job!

Thanks! While sometimes I do create my own models and skins, this one is 'off-the-shelf'.

This looks great. I could never quite get down rigging models. Damn inverse kinematic handles.

Hehe. I must say that the creator that made that zebra's fur coat is waaaaaaaay too perfect. No scars, no blemishes, hard to imagine in real life in Africa, but still I like it. I dunno about that tail, lol. I see that Vue stiiiiiill does not know how to make clouds look real, but it's getting better, slowly. Like the lightning tho, it is first rate...can almost hear the approaching thunder. I may sculpt a zebra in 3D as my next species, as I may have as many as 1 million moving zebras in an animated scene- at least that is my goal anyway in life. Well done, Daniel. Inspiring.

I gotta say, when I saw the thumb I thought it's ear was a horn and I was thinking you'd created a unicorn zebra. XD
Beautiful piece either way!
