I am not 100% sure where I got the idea from, but I think Patrick got quite a bit of gas one day - even the slightest disturbance such as a hug can cause him to let off highly flammable gas. The sign reminds people not to smoke or use ignition sources (even static!), otherwise his gas would be set alight and anyone or anything in the way would be burnt. Other signs I might conder would be "DANGER GAS NO SMOKING", "DANGER NO SMOKING NO IGINITION SOURCES", and the Flammable Gas diamond sign.
