Medium: Drawn in Photoshop.

Tools employed: I discovered this tutorial about perspectives with two points and how to make a guideline grid. It was extremely helpful! Also used various dry and wet media brushes to create smoke effects.

Video of crowd running toward camera thanks to Google.

Content: Alice encounters the Fallen Stars within their city, and charges in to kill as many as she can.

About: Round Two! I found this round very difficult because I don't have much experience with drawing cities, and I'm really not so great at drawing straight lines.

I used the perspective guide tutorial to try to work at keeping the picture internally consistent, something I often have trouble with when I do pictures using many elements, instead of just a simple background/middleground/foreground.

Because of time constraints and my desire to draw a crowd, I decided not to animate fo rthis round-- instead the picture focuses on Alice's confrontation with the first Fallen Star she meets outside the city limits, the city itself and its travel through the "nothing" plane, and the horde of Fallen Stars racing out of the gates, following the smell of blood on the air.

Difficulties I encountered revolved really heavily around execution. I sketched about thirty different fighting poses, with varying numbers of Fallen Stars in direct melee with Alice or taking ranged damage, before I decided on the pose you see here. Nothing seemed quite right; knowing that Alice would be in a half-mad rage over the Fallen Stars (if she wasn't scared out of her wits) meant that it felt cheesy every time I tried to draw her fighting normally and confidently, in a style that actually suits her. I wanted to convey how dangerous and reckless she was being here, so I went for a hind-shot that lets us see Alice's face twisted in rage as she gores her enemy brutally.

Another difficulty was trying to get the city right. My original idea with regards to the moving city was that it floated, with a repulsor engine that was making the "nothing" warp crazily and flop around. The huge jets coming off of the city would cover it, but I planned for the City to have a circular design with the base "Fallen Star" helmet design as the layout of the buildings, sort of as an in-joke to myself after having a LOT of difficulty learning to draw Fallen Star helmets. I tried a few designs of the floating city, but it looked stupid; then I tried a stationary city, and while I could create a really nice effect of a layered skyline after practicing for a while, I didn't really think it suited my story idea at all.

So finally, the claw feet came in. And I really do like them! I liked the idea that they kick up dust as they puncture through the fine layer of power that keeps the "nothing" suspended in an air-filled space and not a vacuum.

Backlighting with the light coming entirely from the energy-field in the ground was difficult, and I'm not sure I did it quite right, but I think reversing some of Alice's standard theme to have the highlights be the base color instead worked pretty well.

I also took some liberties with the designs of the Fallen Stars. While I like the original idea behind the Fallen Stars, I felt that the designs were limiting to how creepy they could truly get, so I tried to emphasize how inhuman they can become.

While it was much less fun than animating for last round, I think it did come out pretty good, and I really love Alice in this one. And the bandage Christine gave her!

Let me tell you, I love the details you put in this piece. The dark feeling going on the city and the Fallen Angels army! Sure a tough battle is going in here.
Also, the story is great, really enjoyable to read. Too many details going in there. Not gonna lie, I feel jealous.
Good luck!

Ahaha, you're so kind! I was really nervous about the piece, drawing backgrounds isn't my strong point.

Thank you! Aw, don't be-- your art was so amazing! I seriously did a double-take. Thanks, you too!

Thanks! I used drop shadows and weird brushes and dissolving effects to try to vary between the different kinds of smoke in the picture.
