Description
This is one of the mics that is in our studio. It isn't the best, in my opinion anyway, although I did use it on a recent project to record some female vocals and they turned out pretty well. It is a Shure SM 58 if anybody was wondering. It is the preferred vocal mic for people like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith who like their vocals a little less crisp I guess I will say... I thought it looked nice with the lighting (wanted to go for the spotlight look, hence the title), let me know what you think...As usual, comments, critiques, and

Awesome photograph. I've never throught much about taking photos of the mics i work with - i think people would look at me funny, though i do have some photos laying around of lights in the drive rack and some of the eq when the light was hitting it and making nice shadows, from a show i happened to have a camera around for because i was lighting designer.
anyway, as far as i know, shure sm 58 is standard for most vocals and shows up in a lot of riders - then there are the beta 58s which have a different pattern of pickup, which causes the monitors to feed back when they're placed right in front of the singer.
anyway, great photo.

Nice use of lighting, the microphone almost represents a persons personality, one side being cold and grey, and the other being warm a coloured

I don't like the B&W version that much (reasons are the same as with plug me in B&W version) It's just not it anymore...

hmmm... i like the b&w of this one especially. i am a little more on the fence with the plug me in one, that is why i left the color one on as well. do you think i should do the same for this shot, give an option?

I would most surly do that! I've removed he fav from this one, as I don't like it that much, but would give it the coloured version again....
Maybe you could try to modify the brightnes/contrast/intensiti of the background separatly (in a different layer) for the coloured version, to get rid of the "too blah" background...
My real problem is, that these images are like materials for adds... you see... commercial photographs. I don't think it is a good idea to go BW with a commercial image, although I admit that sometimes it can be a good idea, but very rearly. With artistic images the case is different, that's what I was talking about in the comment for "plug me in" bw version...

Great shot here as well. The lighting on the mike is just about perfect, maybe a little bright right at the top, but still great nonethe less.

i think u were too up close with this one... if it wasnt for the title i wouldnt even think its under a spotlight... maybe just some random ambient light..
if u were to take a step or two back and get some darkness in the shot i think it would have amplified the fact that it was under that spotlight cuz of the contrast it could create

I love music, anything that deals with music. You've tackled the intimacy of music here. The emotion of the show at hand...just from one little spotlight on a mic.

cool shot...experiment with different lighting, and varying the effects with the camera. might also try black and white...stuff like that. play with it.

I like this photo, it has a very crisp professional look, you could almost use it for an advertisement. Not only that, but it kinda makes me think of all the band practices I spend with my boyfriend, good memories.. Soo, when I see this, it makes me happy. -Kia Lola

SM58's are the music standard for most professionals nowadays, I hear. My vocalist uses one, at least! I always thought it had a warmer, deeper sound to it... grittier? Either way, nice pic!

compared to the other mics we have in our studio... we have a Neumann TLM 103 and a AKG C 3000 that have a bit of a nicer quality to them (but are a hell of a lot more expensive) at least in my short experimentation with them...

I love the angle and the way the light picks out alll the small details, it amkesit seem kinda surreal, but also kind of hyper-real, do you know what I mean?
It makes me think of the moment of silence before someone stars singing into it, of all the possibilities and power that it holds.
Ye gads, sorry for the lameness I want to be a singer, can you tell? Great piece xx

That's fair enough I write lyrics and am trying to save for either singing lessons or a bass, I haven't decided. I'd like to work on my voice, but I have no clue about musical arrangement so I'm thinking learning an instrument might help me in that area. My poem 'Bleed for me, my Celluloid' is pretty much about me wanting to be a rock star. Lame perhaps, but just... the physical need to do something. Its very distracting
