YES!!! I love this story...and now I'm trying to decipher the picture. Lönnrot and Scharlach in the Triste le Roi, yes?

Sweet. That scene was by far my favorite in the story. I loved your designs of the characters, by the way! How did you first get interested in the story?

It was in high school. We were learning about Borges, Cortázar, Márquez, and other contemporary magical realism authors in Latin America. Where we live. One of the texts we had to read was "Las Ruinas Circulares" (The Circular Ruins), so I got an anthology from the school library. And I just happened to read "La Muerte y la Brújula" (Death and the Compass) too.

That one, I liked, a lot.

Ah, interesting! The only exposure I get to magical realism literature is in Spanish class, so you're lucky in that it's an integral part of your culture. I wish I'd gotten to read the story in school; I'd imagine you'd get a lot more out of it that way. Was 'Circular Ruins' good?

Not the same way Death and the Compass was. It felt more metaphorical.
