personally i know what i want to do, but the idea that we all have to collage is a frustration that i know quite well. every person going under these stresses has made a collage degree almost as worthless as a ged

Wait, wait, wait!!! You will get nothing of real value if you do it now. You will waste a ton of money and years of your life...and you'll end up having to do it all again when you finally find what you actually want to do. Just wait!

I prefer to be following my dreams, even if that doesn't make much money in the beginning. In the end, it'll pay out. I don't have to be in some college, studying for a job that I won't even like.

If you don't want to go to college, then don't. If it's just you not knowing what you want to do then declare a general major or something that's KIND of what you like and change it later if you find you like certain classes more.

College/university should be fun, I get to take classes now that I never could in high school.... *rambles* XD

you know, what you feel now seems to be emotions that are clouding your judgement. I hope you dont follow these emotions but think clearly and logically. youll regret it later. A good education is your foundation, the ground you stand on. Unless you have oil wells pumping in your backyard, youll need to earn a living. And besides unemployment leads to depression, with the money or without it. You cant get a good job without a good education.
Push yourself, get into college life, make friends, get interested in your subjects, and a carreer will come your way. youll figure out what you want to do once you get serious and figure out your field of interest! Obviously you dont have a carreer in mind now with your outlook on education!

I know its hard, its a situation one can relate to...i also didnt want to do something at a point when i was young but my parents pushed me, and now im eternally grateful to them.

I dont want to be harsh, im trying to give you some constructive advice dont dump your education. think before you act, consider

I'm not sure. I'm happy this worked out for you, but not everyone is the same. Firstly, there are a lot more ways to educate yourself than going to school. ST could find mentors, or start creating things, get a job somewhere and just learn from living.

My mother went to college when she was "supposed" to, but before she was really ready, and ended up wasting that time and money. She went back later when she'd found something she was interested in, and it was a wonderful experience.

However, ST, thinking logically does sound like a good idea. Why are you apprehensive? Can you think of other things that you could do with your time that would be constructive for you? Is taking a year off enough, or do you never want to go at all?

Lastly, you're young. People always seem so focused on the future, and how you'll never be successful if you don't do this now, but I have a hard time believing that's the case. Good luck, and I wish you lots of support from the people who matter to you, whatever you end up doing

I understand its not the same for everyone, its just that its a bureaucratic world we live in, most good jobs ask for qualifications.

But of course its ST's choice...though, as you said, logic would help

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ptolemaeus In reply to Snezhinka [2008-05-28 19:14:12 +0000 UTC]

Sure they do, but there are a lot more qualifications than just degrees If you can prove you have experience, intelligence, creativity, ingenuity, etc. by the things you have done in life, that will be enough to get a good start. I think getting a job is sort-of like getting into college, in that way. Everyone knows one way (high school to get into college, college to get a job), and think that if you DON'T do that it's impossible, but the fact is that that way doesn't always work, and that there ARE alternatives.

Of course. Logic is always helpful. But a good combination of logic and emotion is best, I think.

i went to the first year of college. i was pushed into it. i hated it. i finished my finals may 2nd, ad dropped out. i dont need a degree to tell people what i like to do and what i can do.

I felt the same way, I wanted to take a year off, but instead, I just enrolled, and honestly, it feels so good. It's like being young and in college has this elated feeling ... but sometimes, it doesn't feel like it is worth it, but I definitely know, it the end it will pay off.

Man, I hope that makes some sort of sense.

There's nothing wrong with waiting a couple years. I waited, and I'm glad I did. If I'd gone to college straight out of high school, I wouldn't have had any idea what to major in either. I took some time to figure out what I wanted to do, rather than waste the time and money in college. I'm about to graduate from college now with a degree I really am happy to have.

GreenFaerie13 [2008-05-14 08:28:34 +0000 UTC]

this is happening to me, as well.
I want to be a photographer, and I know how difficult that will be, but college just seems like a waste. not to mention, we don't have enough money.

but every time my parents bring it up, they make it sound like I am going to college. no matter what. and if I don't? I will amount to nothing. >.>
so I definitely feel you there.

TailoredAngelsHorror [2008-05-14 06:05:48 +0000 UTC]

oh man...I was there! And I got pushed to go to college...and it was great in a way, I really got out of my shell and made a lot of new friends and some that will probably, hopefully, be with me my whole life. Of course...that's just the social scene.

Academically, since I wasn't really ready for it, since it wasn't really my choice, I messed up seriously. And when and if I decide to go back, and I'm sure I will, I'm going to have to take care of the mess I made. So I think you should make the decision that is right for you now before you push yourself too far and waste time and money.

corvus-luna [2008-05-14 05:23:21 +0000 UTC]

well, i felt the same way after high school, i thought about taking a year off, but then i thought, "Well what the hell would i do for a year? i don't have hte money to travel, and thats all i really wanna do..."
so i went ot college. and its so much fun! (for me at least). i'm just finishing my first year (last final is tomorrow), and i have NO IDEA what i want to do with my life. but thats the beauty of college. they give you the first two years to get your GE's done, and that give you some time to figure out what you do, and do not, want to do.

and as the rule goes (and i've seen it proven many a time), if you didn't like high school, you'll love college, and vice versa.

so hopefully that helps a little...i hope.

I've tried explaining to them that I -want- to go to college. But I think it will be more beneficial to me when I actually want to be there, not when I feel like I'm going just to please them.

I agree...I think that college may end up being something for me, but since I went on their accord and not mine I didn't put the effort and time in to the work. Go when it's on your accord and you won't regret it, go on their's and you very well might! Good luck!

don't do what everyone else wants you to do. take time off and find something you really love. i worried too much about what my family wanted me to do, and now i'm stuck in my senior year of college graduating with a degree i'll never use. so be sure of what you want to go to college for.

good luck

I didn't go to college. I would love to get the education, but the career I've chosen doesn't require a college degree, and I have gotten my education in other ways...

Follow the path that is right for you.

People around me at the moment are acting like going to Uni is something I AM going to do and will do. They tend to talk like "oh when you're at uni" or "after you finish uni".

Uni isn't for everyone and for some they need some time to get their head around what they want to do for the next few years.

Tell them you'd rather wait a year and figure out what you want to do than be almost forced into going and choosing something that isn't right for you and is a waste of money.

Whatever happens try to learn a positive lesson from it or just think of the positive things that happened during the time.

Maybe take a year off and find what you want to do with your life.
And after that year go off to college, maybe learn a trade (they're needed and are well paying).
But, really you should go to college. Not many places will hire people with only high school education.

sometimes, it takes longer for some people, myself included, to figure out what they want to do for the rest of their lives.
What I decided to do, and am still doing, is make myself to go to a community college. You can take any classes you want (it helps you become open minded at set up a list of things your interested in), while it is still going to atleast an AA or for transfer credit, I guess. And its something to keep your mind off of the pressuring of other people, in a way. Your doing something, so, they should be happy.

Just know, ultimately, you can take your time to choose what you want to do. Don't let others pressure you into doing what THEY want... do what YOU want, find out what will make you happy in life, and just go with the flow of your happiness ^-^
