Description Posting on dA and browsing through the gallery has made me realize how long it's been since I've drawn anything realistic. Normally I hate drawing portraits, but I was curious to see whether my ability to draw realism has actually improved. After all, I've only been drawing anime style characters for the past several years. I know I've improved in that area (though sometimes it really feels like I haven't >_< ) but I was wondering whether anything I'd learned might help me draw realistically.

Course, copying from a photograph is one thing, and drawing realistically is another thing entirely. Ah well, hopefully I'll learn something from this little exercise.

So ... the real test of my abilities: Can anyone tell me who the woman is in the portrait?

I'll try to keep tweaking it in the next few days because there's something that's bugging about her face ...

Is it...you? *wink*

Anyhoo, the picture looks good. I don't know if replicating someone verbatim is a good yardstick for awesomeness, since you pulled this off pretty good.

I still don't mind knowing who it is, though.

lol. nope. I'M prettier XD Totally agree with you, being able to copy something isn't the talent of a great artist, though I used to think it was. Looking back at my old art, I can see that I was able to copy animals and Disney characters with pretty high precision, but when it came to drawing from my own imagination, I fell pretty short. That's still often the case, which really rams the point home to me that I haven't improved as much as I would like.

Still, I'm hoping that by copying from real life, I'm forcing myself to examine details that I would otherwise miss. Then maybe I'll be able to transfer what I've learned to my comic and other artwork.

Hehe. I tried the whole copying thing too - and ended up being a Yoshitoshi Abe wannabe (a lot of people point it out. >_> ). Now I'm aiming for a more distinct style. It's a weird path, but a worthy one!

And I think you're pretty awesome with details now ('pretty awesome'=='what-the-fuck-how-cool-are-those-highlights-and-coloring'). Maybe it's time for more experiments? Hee. I'd loooove to see what you come up with, B.

Ok, now it's my turn to say how much I love you ^_^ Thanks for totally making my day, heck, for making the rest of my year.

I have been tweaking the experiment ever since I posted the last one ... but I've been feeling pretty down lately, which is reflected in the fact that I keep fiddling with my pieces but can't finish them anymore. Sigh. But! I shall post up what I have so far - then maybe I can feel like I've actually accomplished something.

>_> Sorry for the angst. It's just been one of those months.

Usually I hate noses (which is why cartoons are so nice because they rarely have "actual" noses) ... but I'm proud with how this one turned out. Had to tweak it quite a bit.

I think part of the issue with the face is the nose: it's shifted a little too far to the right - in particular, the white spot at the "point", or whatever you want to call that part at the bottom between the nostrils, could be reshaped a little so that there's more of it to the left. Also, the left nostril (her right one, that is) looks a bit too large compared to the other one; I think part of that is the shading effect, but using a softer grey instead of the black to shade it in would fit better with the rest of the drawing.

As for who it is... Ehh, I fail... If it's a celebrity, well, I rarely watch television... ;>_>

Yeah...I noticed that about the nose positioning early on, but when I tried to rectify it, I had a bit of trouble because I wanted to maintain that straight curve of her nose - which is really what makes or breaks the perspective of the head (straight on and slightly chin up). I had some trouble with the placement of everything on her face ... her head's a bit too wide for the relative size of her features, I think.

As for the shading, the original pic was interesting in that the right side of her face was nearly completely in shadow. So I wanted to see how well I could replicate that without it seeming too bizarre.

Gotta keep fiddling.

Isn't she blonde? No wait. ... I'm thinking Diane Keaton. *imdb's Diane Lane* Never seen her before But she's also blonde. I'm surprised no one has guessed Elisha Cuthbert yet (even though she's blonde too, cuz I totally thought it looked like her ... even though it isn't
