Tears staining the sheets,
Head on her knees listening
To the phone's continuous bleeps.
Summoning her courage she picks up the phone,
Reads the sharp words from her mother
and feels so alone.
Taught since a baby,
That family would always be there.
Learning instead that life isn't fair.
Discovering the conditions
That govern this 'love',
Not being yourself,
If you aren't good enough.
Kick you out if you're queer,
If you can't keep up your grades,
Doesn't matter if you're always here
It's just a game of charades.
People would rather have you see their shadow,
Lacking detail and definition and overly shallow.
Lap up the praise for the appearance they cast
