Description Tribulation is a planned god game developed by Bethesda Softworks, considered the spiritual successor to Maxis' 2008 video game Spore, with which it shares many gameplay mechanics. Tribulation allows a player to control the development of a species from its beginnings as a microscopic organism, through development as an intelligent and social creature, to interstellar exploration as a spacefaring culture.

Gameplay:

Tribulation allows the player to develop a species from a microscopic organism to its evolution into a complex animal, its emergence as a social, intelligent being, to its mastery of the planet and then finally to its ascension into space, where it interacts with alien species across the galaxy. Throughout the game, the player's perspective and species change dramatically.

The game is broken up into distinct "stages". The outcome of one phase affects the initial conditions and leveling facing the player in the next. Each phase exhibits its own style of play, and has been described by the developers as ten times more complicated than its preceding phase. Phases often feature optional missions; when the player completes a mission, they are granted a bonus , such as a new ability or money. If all of a player's creations are completely destroyed at some point, the species will be respawned at its nearest colony or at the beginning of the phase.

Tribulation is a game that is separated into stages, each stage presenting a different type of experience with different goals to achieve. The three stages are the Evolution Stage, the Sapience Stage and finally the Nirvana Stage. Once the primary objective is completed, the player has the option to advance to the next stage, or to continue playing the current stage.

Evolution Stage:
The game begins in a Pre-Cambrian era, the player takes the role of minuscule worm crawling on the ocean floor. The primary objective is to survive, and find a mate before natural death to proliferate the species. The player then traverses into the organism's womb, where an editor allows the player to customize their offspring. They are limited to the genetic information between themselves and their partner, which is why it is important to carefully select the strongest of the species for reproduction. Gradually your species evolves from its humble beginnings as a primitive worm to an intelligent and cunning organism.

Sapience Stage:
After the brain of the player's species evolves sufficiently, the species may enter the Sapience Stage. The species' design becomes permanent, and the player sheds control of an individual creature in favor of the entire civilization, as the game focuses on the birth of division of labor for the species. The player assigns castes to the people in the population, such as slaves, peasantry and nobility, while also recruiting advisers which enhance certain aspects of your government. A tech tree is used to further research technology and philosophy needed to compete with rival countries. The tech tree consists of defense, commerce, science and culture.

Nirvana Stage:
The Nirvana stage begins after the discovery of Halcyon Energy, a fictional energy used to rip holes in the fabric of space and time. If your species has not united already they will consolidate their sovereignty in exchange for Halcyon. The element is rare and requires massive amounts of resources to obtain. A mass exodus occurs, the colonization of the final frontier: the cosmos. Along the way you will encounter extraterrestrial empires, divided into five alliances. Choose your faction wisely and begin the conquest of the stars in a massively multiplayer online experience.
