It's easy. I got my steel from Lowe's. They stock a variety of thicknesses (Gauge), and size. They have up to 2ft x 2ft sheet of 16g steel, and 4ft x 2ft sheet of 22g steel. It costs about 20.00 for a 2x2 sheet of 22g, and 37.000 for 16g.
It is actually called "weld steel" so, yes, you can weld it. If you look at my dragon full helm, you'll see that I was able to weld one of the parts of this armor... sadly these are just attached with some screws in the sole of the shoe.
