Bonus points for slight Indy Jones reference - and your "Well of all souls" is a very apt description for what i interpreted it to be about in the end. You go to the light after you die (and served some time in purgatory). If the light went out there is no afterlife and you don't get to meet up with all your buddies from the island ever again. A bit of a design flaw though in that the very same thing doubles as the cosmic cork to the bottle of evil which you don't want spreading across the Earth.
