Alright. I'm really bad at coming up with stories, but here's a try.
The first idea I get is that this is a child who was hurt terribly and she now has really no idea what to do.

Well.. I'm no good at these things but i'll give it a go since I love your photography When I see it.. I feel like.. She was hurt by someone terribly.. Lost control and tried to hurt them back.. Case of the guilts took over and she's left to sit with the only memories of this person she has left
Either way, it's a great photo

The story I see:
She's leaving (bag/clothes) her past behind for some reason. She just wants to "burn" (= gasoline) all of her memories and find new ones. Maybe she lost her love, maybe a family member or friend..maybe she just wants to get away for her own personal reasons. The reason for her sitting on the steps could be that she's thinking back on everything before leaving it all. I don't know, that's what I get from it.
Lovely pic, btw.

It's that pivotal moment before you really act. You've thought about it so many times before, planned it out step by step.
She is about to act on her thoughts... but she needed one more moment to make sure it was the 'right' thing to do. She is going to take just what she needs to get by, but before she leaves she is burning that bridge because she will never ever cross it again. She doesn't want to, and doesn't need to go back to that again. The road ahead will be hard. Her feet will be dirty and bruised, but what she'll come to will be so much better than what she had.

I don't get the sense, like others, that she's going to burn the place down. The way she is sitting with her hands like that makes me think that she's waitin for someone to come and pick her up. The gas can? Maybe whoever has been drinking has given up on taking care of the place, including mowing the grass. The gas can is there as a reminder to him to mow the grass, but he drank instead, like usual, and this was the last straw. She's called a friend and is leaving, for good.

it's chilling.
she's locked her drunk uncle in the house.
after years of abuse, she's breaking free.
a baptizing in fire.
thats the story i see.

This is so wonderful. Your concepts are always so strong and thought-provoking. There's this sadness of leaving everything behind, but also the hope of a better life after the slate has been wiped clean. You've got to deal with your past to move on.
The atmosphere of this also reminds me of a song... dunno why, but it just came to mind when I saw this: [link]

thank you i give a lot of credit to she's a close friend of mine and a bit of a mentor and she pushes "concept" constantly. i find i like to take pretty photos - but in the end - the most satisfying images are indeed those that tell a story

throwing away an old life
a life she does not want
it looks like she is in poor conditions, financially, but this photo seems to hold a lot of hope
even without seeing her face, i feel determination for things to get better
i love shots like this
because i know that the photographer wanted to convey a story, an emotion, and purposelly controlled the lighting, subject, angle, and props in accordance with that
everything in this photo has meaning
from the grass, to the barefeet,to the empty bottle, to the canvas suitcase
amazing shot

This piece is a power picture. I'm from the midwest and I've seen this seen all to often. What's sad is I normally seen young children playing in and about it.
Powerful.

her body language expresses both defeat, defiance and strength, it's so complex and wonderful. I love all the elements, the clothes, the liquor, the gasoline... the destruction of past in tangible language. Amazing work Mary!

probably my sick mind and the excess of horror movies.... but it makes me think of a girl that used to live in an old house, ugly, dirty and made of wood. She lived with her father that abused her, and one day she just gets fed up of it all and burns the house with his dad inside, taking with her only the dresses that she loved the most
now if my therapist reads this, she would probably have a heart attack

I love how the light falls just right in this for me and emphasises the obvious and leaving the rest to actually to be investigated further. Almost like hiding what this really means. It's a powerful picture and her feet are just too cute.
I'd love to have this as a print, any plans to make it available?

Very nice concept here and I love the composition
Sometimes it is necessary to burn a bridge in order to move on.
...whether it is a bridge in your mind or a bridge in life with people..
This makes me think of something bad happening to her perhaps as a child,
and now she is grow, and returns to destroy the past to get it out of her thoughts for good.
I love the image but my eyes are drawn to the pink nail polish and the nice overnight bag...Perhaps the intent was that she has grown and is doing well with her new life, so she returns to the ramshackle home of her youth to destroy it. I just feel it would be stronger with grubbier feet and props...but then maybe that would make it cliche'.
Either way, strong piece Mary and I know your heart went into this and it holds special meaning to you.

Unless you look closely it is hard to tell if she is a child or a woman...I'm guessing she's a bit of both really. She knows too much about the underbelly of life. She is going to be alright though...because she has courage and options...and she's almost off the porch. Beautiful work! I love your intuition...

Great symbolism in this, good message and expressiveness. I love the texture blends, the nostalgic feel to this, leaving the pat, and moving forward. Sometimes those bridges need burning.

that's an unmary-ish crop but i like it! im not too sure about the fingertips at the top. i think one should be able to see more or nothing of the hands. but that's my view. i immediately had to think of the book/movie fried green tomatoes when i saw the thumb. i don't know why. but the feeling is strong

she was leaving him... so she pasked up a bag, and set out on foot since she knew he'd find some way to trace the car, while she was walking she ran into a little old man stopped along side the road who offered her a kind word and a ride and she said she'd go where ever he was heading... so here she is, with his gas can that she carried to the house for him, sitting on his steps, waiting for...
