Description
And the madness continues being the best thing since the comments-blocking option ! Democracy ? Pff, I was absent the day they taught that...You know, at first I did not know what to add about this movie because... I love it as much as the first ! I mean, we still have the murderous quasi-psycho Batman of the early days dusted-off and improved for 1992. The world around him is still distorted and cartoonish and the fire's been burning since the earth's been turning. This time around the dark knight shall bury a crooked businessman, a maniacal secretary and a fallen aristocrat who became a circus director and ornithologist... unfortunately he then was convinced to take up politics and it all went downhill from there. That's how you add realism to a comic book movie !
What's there to like ? Well...
* This works actually a lot more as a stand-alone movie rather than a direct sequel. In fact if the first movie answers the vital question "what'd happen if the original Batman met the O'Neil era Joker ?", this one is very similar to a Batman elseworlds comic in its glorious fucked-uptivity !
* Danny Elfman's score is a fucking DELIGHT !
* I love how Bruce is there bored while waiting for the Bat-Signal to go there and kick ass ! It's like the GCPD knew they had a competent vengeful psycho on their side, so when things go out of hand , just unleash the Bat-Keaton ! And it finally occured to me why there is NO Arkham Asylum in the Burton movies...nor a Blackgate prison for that matter.... dynamite-pants anyone ?
* How come Alfred is putting ornaments on a tree for christmas ? I mean, what's even the use ?
* Christopher Walken is ...as sca-ry...AS...a Nosferatu ! He is truly the life of Gotham City...its mean and twisted soul. Also somewhat thick... I mean, "Bruce Wayne, Why are you dressed up like Batman ?".
* Ah Catwoman... I was never terribly interested in the character before this movie (yeah I only knew Chiroptera-man in the animated series beforehand...the superhero stuff you see drawn here ? All discovered as an adult.). But here? She is everything insecure employees aspire to be. If you can pull off surviving a 10 store-fall and then dressing up in tight black leather to go beating up thugs and threatening civilians. And man if her relationship with Batsie ain't perfect ! Don't you love it when deranged people are star-crossed lovers ? The best Selina Kyle scenes are a) the freaky "transformation" b) any time she and Bruce try having a normal conversation.
* Talking about this movie makes me hunger for some fish...with olive oil and a nice, fresh lemonade.... and filling voids....
* The Penguin. MOTHERFUCKING HELL DO I LOVE OSWALD CHESTERFIELD COBBLEPOT (and you wonder why he appeared in almost every instalment of my "Best Of Batman" drawings ?) and Danny DeVito just owned the screen every time he was on !Β
You know if someone asked what the character's SOUL would look like, THIS is a pitch perfect depiction !
He's the sexiest on-screen live Bat-Villain after AdewaleΒ Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Waylon Jones due to their naked sexual charisma.
Granted Burton added the whole circus freak and the whole parental rejection but it serves to emphasises the characteristics the character already had ! Looking for society's respect ? FUNDAMENTALLY. Affinity for birds ? Definitely. Leader of a gang ? Assuredly. Political eloquence and charisma ? Absolutely. Drowning kids and shooting lippy henchmen ? Knowing how cruel Oswald can be when you tick him off, I would not put it beneath him. It's no surprise that the best takes on the Penguin take cues from this version and Meredith's at the same time.
And as for my favorite Penguin line, reminding me of my general contempt towards children, men and women...
" The time has come to punish *all* God's children! 1st, 2nd, 3rd AND 4th-born! Why be biased? Male and female! Hell, the sexes are equal with their erogenous zones BLOWN SKY HIIIIGH !"
His demise gets me every time. THAT's what I call a tragic villain. But hey, it could be worse, my nose could be gushing BLOOD ! Hehehehe !
Man sometimes you just need to see a good villain in action to feel better !

Not one of my favorite villains (I do find him interesting in the Gotham TV series though) but this depiction of him is spot on. Just like in the old Batman movie

The Gotham version is kind of toned down, though he eventually becomes a big crime boss. The guy has styleΒ www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1ZYOsβ¦

he looks exactly like the movie, good work
Maybe Alfred wants to put something that could live up the Wayne residence a little
I liked this Catwoman, Though In the future there were better incarnations of her and honestly the whole cat reviving her seemed to goofy
which reminds There is a rumor that this movie was kind like the sixties Batman but adapted to the Burton style. which Would explain some things
the other moments that bug me a bit is that Batman doesn't appear too much, while I like the villains I'm not a big fan of the story focusing on them too much (except if it is an episode of the series), though from what I heard, Burton isn't a big fan of the character himself.
While this penguin isn't my favorite, I liked the performance of DeVitto and see more like a standaone character than adapted from the comic books as he has some differences.

To be honest, Burton has said everything about Bruce's character in the first movie so the focus shift was not much of a problem. Plus he gets to kick ass and take names any time he's on screen "things change..."
Burton is not a big fan of comics in general (though seeing how much of a shithead Kevin Smith was towards him, I can see why he'd be like that. I mean I love a lot of comics but you may have noted that I have nothing but contempt towards most of the fanbases...)
Yeah, on-the-nose symbolism aside, Burton's Catwoman has a charisma that the comics versions often lack (I mean Moench's version is funny and Brubaker's works great because of the noir setting but aside from that she is indeed just kinda there...)
I'd still vote for Ozzy as a mayor though XDΒ

I didn't know that about Kevin Smith. As for fanbases, this is why I'm extremely selective about which videogame reviewer I listen too and don't accept anything of the "top 10 best comic books/movie/ etc. ever"
I tend to like her a lot in other stories like the Loeb-Sale run (or at least when Sale draws her)
In the Batman adventures comics (set during Bats' time in JL) Ozzy does....actually read the story

Yeah the Loeb-Sale run is cool. If anything its Batman is really likeable and "Long Halloween" is where I started to enjoy Harvey Dent more than Two Face ( as a kid it was the opposite XD ). Also I love Tim Sale 's depiction of the villains , it's the right amount of cartoon and bizarre !

Indeed he is one great artist, did a great job with Harvey Dent/Two Face and his Batman really felt really human, I will comment more about him and a popular rumor of him with Loeb when you (or if) put your Loeb/Sale run tribute
but did you read the comic Batman adventures?

Yeah I should do a Batman drawing in the style of Tim Sale. Yes , I did read it and it is among my favorites with the runs I've already listed ! A lot of cool stories and character moments, which is all I need honestly.

Very good summary of the movie, from the height of Burton's career. I knew of this and the BTAS version of Penguin long before I found the comics, so I always thought the flipper hands were a given.

SO did I. I was initially disappointed by Penguin's mundane appearance in the comics but with some time he has proven to be one of the most consistent badasses !

I love this movie too. Though I do prefer a classier-looking Penguin, what you said about this version being like his soul makes total sense and I agree with it. His lines are amazing, and despite how awful a person he is I always felt sorry for him when he died. Great villain.Β
And holy shit,

I'm dying XD
