Description
And yet another beloved character of mine is here for you to savor ! Good old Hank Henshaw himself ! He is one of my favorite Superman villains ever and a reason I, KAIS, bother with the occasional Green Lantern arc. His character evolution is how one nails the tragic villain type...A rundown on what happened:
- Henshaw's original motivation was to save his wife and friends after their mission went awry. Unlike Reed Richards, his team were all trained professionals rather than a-holes stealing a spaceship and Hank was not a dick. This did not work out as he became a literal Ghost in the shell, interacting through machinery and only his wife survived...
- Hank later left Earth on a journey of knowledge, after his appearance made a unstable Terry commit suicide. His vessel of choice was Superman's initial birth matrix that landed Clark on Earth. It was not the best idea...
- ... drifting alone in space made Henshaw completely nuts. Isolation took its toll, and his new state of existence not helping, he decided to blame Superman for all the shit that's occured if he EVER finds a way back. Man did he keep his word !
- Henshaw faked being Superman during "Reign Of The Supermen" then blew the fuck up out of Coast City (I am grateful for that BTW). He aimed to turn the Earth into a new Warworld, because egomania is still a better state of mind than isolated madness, but was stopped by a whole team helping the freshly returned Clark. Could've won if the Eradicator was not there...
- From then on, he was full-on evil. Hank continued to plague Superman with plots to kill him/recreate a Warworld, save for a brief stint (well honestly they should've made last longer cus I love it) where Henshaw tried to live a normal life as an arts' teacher acting as how he was before the whole ordeal started. His seething hatred against Superman screwed that up.
- Henshaw remains in Comics limbo ( the post-90's Supes run was not nice to him .... even If I did not hate the Loeb-Kelly-Casey era...) until Geoff Johns brings him back ! He returns as the grandmaster of Manhunters and a new (yet logical) mindset. Tired of his own meaningless life of being a lonely, half-machine murderer reviled by all and loved by none, (and NOT even a single Superman fighting game where he could be a boss...) Hank just wanted to end it all. For all his monstrosity, I actually feel bad for him.
A tragic villain yet still totally heartless and demented !
