Description
It's fun to compare printed and on-screen version of a story , so I'll do it (like thousands before me) for Kipling's Jungle Book and the Disney twist. The Disney film is about Mowgli, a baby who winds up in the jungle and is befriended by talking predators (siiigh... more on that later). After avoiding the human world for years and spending most of his childhood in the jungle, Mowgli stumbles upon a village at the end and is instantly smitten with Shanti, a girl who was taking water to her village and they live happily ever after ...until the bullshit sequel that took this movie's weaknesses and cranked them up tenfold.
The book is ... about several stories really. And Mowgli is only part of those stories since some of them cover protagonists such as Rikki-Tiki-Tavi.
But let's get down to business and compare the comparable...
MOWGLI
Disney version : The kid hero of our flick... I cannot describe how much of a dipshit this little douche is and how much he succeeds in pissing me off ! Is pretty much fearless (and fucking rude...), even when faced with man-eating predators but that's mostly due to being a dumbfuck rather than actual courage. I mean the jungle offers so many opportunities to butcher this meatbag and yet none of them are taken to off him ! GRRRRAAAAAAHHH !
Book version : Basically wolf-Tarzan, with a penchant for naturism. Is nick-named “Mowgli the Frog” by the lords of the jungle; Can hunt, track and kill effectively and actually learns his fucking lesson. Will eventually turn an entire village into ashes by the end of the story, but to be honest, those assholes fucking had it coming !
BALOO
Disney version : Is such a laid-back slacker that even Donald Duck would question his way of life. Is also rather clumsy and a punching ball for monkeys, but really makes up for it by being almost inexplicably cool. Will increase his coolness by becoming a pilot...
Book version : A very stern and wise yet loving teacher. Teaches Mowgli about the Laws of the Jungle, and frequently smacks him upside the head if he gets anything wrong (light smacks of course cus, well, he's a fucking bear ! ).
BAGHEERA
Disney version : Mowgli’s friend and guardian, who wants to return his to the human village (though you can debate whether it is to gently get rid of that little shit..).Is wise and extremely patient considering his ungrateful task ...
Book version : The pinnacle of pantherian grace and beauty ! Was born in a cage in the king’s palace at Oodeypore, escaped and adapted to the jungle. Is one of the most feared predators in the entire story.
BANDAR-LOG TRIBE
Disney version : A bunch of monkeys with dancing skills led by the orangutan King Louie. How's King Louie ? The AMAZING GOD of all swingers, the Jungle VIP .Wants to become a human through the knowledge of fire, and yet has enough singing and dancing skills to set the fucking public on fire and make them his bitches ! And if you disagree, you simply have no soul! www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JDzlh… . He will get a motel/nightclub as a consolation prize...
Book version : a bunch of aggressive monkeys that run after hubris. Seriously harm Baloo and Bagheera and kidnap Mowgli but , praised be the lord , end up as snake meals. Speaking of which...
KAA
Disney version : A reticulated python with hypnotic talents . Wait a minute ? Why is Kaa considered a villain again ?...Because he wants to eat Mowgli ? So , a snake , who's a carnivorous animal , is a villain because he just kills to survive ... Okay , I am tired of hearing how much of an creepy asshole Kaa is, because he actually IS the most sympathetic character of this whole damn movie ! And seeing who he wants to eat, is nearly a tragic hero in my book ! Should however start constricting rather than hypnotising, just saying ...Has one cool design evolution though img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…
Book version : THE GOD of Burmese pythons ! Is one of Mowgli’s wisest and most badass friends. Hypnotises his preys through ophidian breakdance (though it useless against humans... even though they can still enjoy his slick moves !)
HATHI
Disney version : A pompous and comically serious elephant, who did invent the coolest military march of all www.youtube.com/watch?v=24Jm3X… (others do not see that way... Philistines !). IS very serious about DISCIPLINE ! (The notion, not the hentai, ya crazies !)
Book version : A wise old and feared elephant and IS DA LAW. Is VERY serious about VENGEANCE !
SHERE KAHN
Disney version : The GOD of man-eating Bengale tigers ! The epitome of polite badassery ! Wants to kill Mowgli, which makes me question his villain status. Is the most feared predator of the jungle but has a serious pyrophobia . Will get over it after becoming a business-man...
Book version : Like Jagi from Hokuto No Ken, this fucker is motivated by revenge and revenge alone ! Is lame in one foot , but unlike Pegleg Pete, ends up being pathetic with that. Hopes the wolves would cast Mowgli out so that he can get him. Hunts cattle and humans due to his handicap , which is forbidden by the Jungle law (I'll call BS on that !).Hates stampedes...
So now kids, what Disney movie shall we compare ? Yoou tell me and I'll see...

Kaa was not a burmese python in the book. He was an Indian rock python. And while Mowgli was bratty and naïve in the Disney versions, he was not annoying. He felt like he was being forced from his own home, and he reacted pretty much like any kid would in his situation. The main thing I hated about the Disney Mowgli is that they pronounced his name wrong. Also, I hardly think the book Mowgli is comparable to Tarzan. Mowgli is more of a scholar than a warlord. He was also a lot friendlier and charming than Tarzan.
As for Shere Khan. He may have been a coward and mostly just all-talk, but he did still pose a threat to Mowgli. He was a fiend who kept trying to convince others that Mowgli is a threat to them. Nevertheless, his main purpose was to be Mowgli's counterpart. They were both outsiders who gained more authority as the story progressed. That is, until Mowgli skins him.

So you managed to bear Disney Mowgli ? Then you are a more patient man than I. I still believe he´s a prime candidate for a Darwin award...
Kaa´s species. Look, Indian Rock and Burmese are so closely related and can even interbreed at this point that I went with the bigger species . And another thing ? Burmese pythons were still considered Molurus until 2009, so forgive me for not keeping up with whatever changes scientists pull out their capricious asses !
Book Shere Kahn´s purpose was to just be the mid-game boss. The dholes were much scarier. He´s a threat in the same sense Jaggi was...

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that Kaa was purely a python molurus, an Indian rock python. Heck, his colour was even described and the description doesn't really match Burmese pythons.
I see Mowgli hardly much different from most Disney protagonists; naïve, independent thinkers, well-meaning and animated to look adorable. In fact, the way I see it, Mowgli is pretty much a more bratty version of Pinocchio (who was also easily led astray). But you have to understand that the Disney cartoon is more about parenting. Bagheera represents the responsible parent who is being a bit too hard while Baloo represents the fun-loving parent who learns that sometimes you need to make a hard choice for the son whether he likes it or not. In fact, Mowgli in that 2016 remake is less bearable in my opinion, but that has mostly to do with bad acting.

Well at least you know that it´s an honest mistake. It´s hard to keep up with the damn details (and at the time the book was written both were considered Python Molurus... also my reptile encyclopedias are around my age...)
I dunno man, I still would wring his scrawny neck like Book Pinocchio. Now Disney Pinocchio, he´s a genuinely nice kid that doesn´t know better.
The words "Disney protagonists" are tricky with me because I immediately think of that adrenaline junkie falsetto-sounding mouse and a certain sailor duck with the Smeagol-like voice... huge fan of both that I am.
The reason I brought up Tarzan is because he´s cool, though that will be a good subject for another comparison.
Really? The movie was that mediocre ? And I thought Johanson as Kaa was a let-down... Sterling Holloway she´s not.
here´s a gift then devilkais.deviantart.com/art/J…

I liked the cartoon better than the remake. As inaccurate the cartoon was, at least it had character connections and more charm than the remake.
As for Pinocchio, I actually find him somewhat comparable to Disney's Mowgli. While Pino is what you said, he was just as naïve (such as disobeying his father about not talking to strangers and being unable to resist all the temptations he was given while ignoring Jiminy's advises).

Well I have a problem with that. The problem being , WHY ? Kaa was always an old guy, so why the change here , was there a quota or something ?

Well that's just ridiculous. At least the anime version exists, if I ever feel like revisiting the best adaptation of the story. And in the french dub , Kaa sounds like Daffy Duck, which only increases his greatness !
Also, the Disney Kaa was at least hilarious (Sterling Holloway FTW !) and in the Jungle Cubs cartoon showed a friendlier side to him. The new one? We have a python talking with Johanson's voice in a bland delivery... so much for an improvement !
That's fucking WEIRD ! And I read comics with Mickey as a drug Dealer (True story and IN-character !).

OMG...I remember Rikki-Tikki-Tavi from my literature class! He was a mongoose and a threat to snakes, right?
Yeah...the Disney version was a bit different from the original story but honestly...I really disliked the original story...like REALLY disliked it. I'm all for treating animals humanely, but it PISSES me off when everyone suddenly makes humans out to almost always be "evil." Like seriously?! Do people realize that those "fuzzy critters" once tried to eat and kill our proto-human ancestors?! And humans simply returning the favor suddenly makes US the "villains?!" Yeah...I call BS on that! We needed food, shelter and furs for warmth, too. And yeah...I agree that Disney Mowgli was quite annoying but hey, he was a freaking kid that never learned proper human behavior! Doesn't he deserve a break? So yeah...it makes Kaa and Shere Khan villains because eating kids ain't cool! Neither in Disney nor in the real world! And if Kaa trying to eat a kid isn't "villainous" then calling a snake or tiger a villain that are trying squeeze the life and kill/eat a little kid is also 100% fair game in my opinion. Animals can find their meal some other way, trying to eat humans thus gives those humans the right to kill and possibly eat the animals back and not feel bad about it at all. (Hey, it's not like the animals feel bad for US if they kill/eat US so why the hell should we feel bad if we eat/kill THEM?! Sorry but I DESPISE double standards.)
But anyway sorry for the rant but yeah...people need to find middle ground between treating animals humanely but also understanding that other people and cultures have every right to eat them and even kill them if warranted (not only for food but also population control and other factors).
But yeah...the differences between the two versions are quite educational and informative. I learned a lot.

I perfectly agree here. I am against animal abuse and poaching but you make a point . Oh and as for the whole double standards www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb2Dxq…

No he doesn't . He is a prime candidate for the Darwin awards. Hell , Baloo is a bear and behaves better XD

Animals are creatures of instincts first . You can't call a carnivore evil for that! That's how nature has programmed them. But I do agree that we're predators too and we too kill to survive. That's part of how we're programmed. So it is fair game.

Thanks so much for agreeing (even if it's just to a point). For a minute, I was afraid I might offend you which is what I didn't want at all. (I was just more ranting about the extremist animal lovers, like PETA, not at you! Because I've had bad experiences with those kinds of people.) And yes same here. And haha...thanks for the link! That really made my day!
Hehehe...well, since Mowgli wasn't raised by humans I guess you can blame his wolf prack for how he turned out, huh? And lol...Disney Baloo was sort of annoying too most of the time. (Although his Disney self's almost heroic sacrifice was pretty admirable). XD
True. Carnivores aren't really "evil" per se. They're just doing what nature programmed them to do. But in that sense, like you said, so do humans.
Anyway, thanks for the link and the understanding! You drew SUPER well BTW.

I just read most of the first book, and while Kipling's style of writing can be a little simplistic at times, it's overall a better story. Aside from Mowgli, I do enjoy the animal characters (I actually like Jungle Cubs better than the movie due to this), and wish that they could've found a balance between the book and the movie. PS-I've actually hated this movie for years because I became scared to death of Kaa (I know, it's weird), and it's been a massive joke in my family (I'm over it now but I'm sure I'll still get someone poking at me for it).
