My Fairy Tale

“I’m honestly tired of this.
It’s like everyone expects me
to be the knight in shiny armor.
To come and slay the dragon
and rescue the princess atop the highest tower.

…but I don’t want a princess,
I want a goddamn Queen!
Someone who can stand up for themselves
and doesn’t need me for protection.
Is that so hard to understand?

And then there’s you…
You could’ve been Her.
I did call you my queen for a while,
But that was naïve of me, I guess…”

And now…
Now my fairy tale is dead,
and so are you for me.
That’s why I locked my heart away,
never again for you to see.

Once upon a time we were happy.
Once upon a time we had it all.
But our ‘once upon’ was so long ago,
now there’s just an eternal fall.

There’ll be no pink unicorns,
no white lilies for us to smell.
All that’s left are rose-thorns
of our heaven-turned-hell.

And I admit I miss you.
But I don’t want you back.
There’s something that’s needed to build an empire,
something which you lack…

That little something is called ‘love’,
something you no longer feel for me.
And that is why, my darling,
you and I can no longer be.

Once upon a time, so long ago,
there was a queen and her black knight
that made love upon the snow.
But their love wouldn’t last,
it’d end up buried in the past,
never to be heard from again.
I was once that black knight
and you were my queen of purest snow.
Our ‘once upon a time’
was such a long time ago…
