Description
Alice closed her eyes.Jasper had disappeared somewhere inside the house, leaving her alone outside, in the dark. For a vampire, Jasper really wasn't that smart. Alice thought he'd temporarily forgotten what she could do.
"This isn't funny!" she yelled. "You know I'm just going to find out what you're doing when you finally make up your mind."
"Try not to ruin the surprise for once," a voice said behind her.
Regardless of Jasper's request, Alice opened her eyes, and whirled around. "What are you doing here? I thought you were out for the night."
Emmett smiled and shook his head. "I told Rose I had to come back here to get something. She'll be okay for awhile."
"Or she'll be angry when she finds out you ditched her," Alice supplied. "Now, really, what are you doing here?"
"Jasper wanted me to watch you."
"Watch me? I'm not a dog."
"Speaking of dogs," Emmett murmured, "how are things going with Jacob? Are you at least trying to be nicer to him?"
"For Bella's sake," Alice said. She shrugged. "He helped us out with that battle, no questions asked."
"Bella is a good person, and chooses her friends well, despite what Rosalie thinks. So I think you should trust Jacob."
Before Alice retorted with something smug, she blinked, realization settling across her face. "You're not here to watch me. You're here to distract me."
"I can fight you off," Emmett said. He stepped in front of her so that his back was to the front door.
Alice rolled her eyes. "I'm sure you could, dear brother. But I'm not going to attack you just to get inside."
"Good. Then I won't have to explain to Carlisle why he'd have a bruised face. Though I won't tell if you want to hit him." Jasper smiled, his golden eyes lingering on Alice's face for a moment or two before he looked at Emmett. "I think you should get back to Rose now. She hates waiting."
"Great bodyguard," Alice muttered as she wrapped her arms around Jasper's waist and rested her head against his chest. "I could have taken him."
"I know you could," he said.
Emmett's voice drifted from somewhere behind them.
"Could so!" Alice shouted back.
Jasper laughed. "I guess I'll choose better next time."
"So, why all the secrecy? Not that Emmett is known for being discreet."
Jasper was quiet.
Alice gave him a look. "Please, Jazz. You really can't expect me to not see what you were doing. What was your decision?"
"I don't know." He smiled. "What was it?"
Alice felt her face screw up in confusion.
The door to the Cullen house opened again and someone came out. He looked around and then started laughing.
"What is he doing here?" Alice snapped.
"You should see your face," Jacob said, stifling another chuckle. "It's priceless."
"Why is he-" Alice stopped, her eyes wide. "Oh, I get it. You used him, Jazz. You know whatever you're doing would be covered because I can't see when one of them is involved in something. That's clever."
Jasper smiled. "I needed this to be kept safe."
Alice nodded to Jacob. "Shouldn't you be with Bella?"
Jacob looked uncomfortable. "She's with Edward."
Alice smirked. "I already knew that. I just know how much you miss seeing her."
"I'll see her soon," he said. "Enjoy your evening."
When he was gone, Alice looked up at Jasper. "So can I see what you planned for me now?"
Jasper nodded and brushed his lips against her forehead. "I want you to close your eyes again."
"That didn't work last time," she reminded him. But she did it anyway.
When he told hold of her hands, she smiled. He tugged until she started to walk, following him back into the house. She knew exactly where everything was so she had no problem avoiding objects. When she heard Jasper stop, she frowned.
"Why did you stop?"
He chuckled and released her hand. "You can open your eyes now."
Slowly, Alice reopened her eyes. They were standing in the foyer, and as she looked around, she couldn't help but smile. "Jazz, this is-"
Illuminating the darkened room were thousands of white candles. There was a small table placed in the middle with a box lying on top of it.
"It's nothing really," he said, shaking his head. "But the box is pretty special since you didn't see it coming."
Alice ran a hand through her short hair and looked at him. "What is all of this for?"
Jasper stared at her, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You said you couldn't remember much from your past, and I thought maybe that meant your birthday, too."
The surge of happiness Alice felt was nothing compared to the amount of love she had for the person in front of her. He had always stood by her. For that she would be forever grateful.
"It's wonderful," she gushed, leaning up to kiss him.
Jasper kissed her slowly, his arms going around her tiny waist. He grinned against her lips before pulling back.
"It's not over yet," he murmured as he took her hand and walked over to the table.
"What's in the box?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Before Jasper could answer, the door behind them opened.
"Looks like we interrupted," a female voice said. "Sorry, Jasper, Alice. We'll get out of the way."
Carlisle and Esme walked passed them and headed to the kitchen. Alice had the distinct impression they were talking very low about the candles and the romance.
"I'm sorry," Jasper said, reaching for her. "People keep ruining the surprise."
Alice snuggled into his chest and they sat on the sofa near the door. She twisted her fingers through his hair. "It's okay," she said. "It was still nice. Maybe you can just give me my gift later."
Jasper looked at her reluctantly.
"Why was this so important to-" she stopped speaking in mid-thought, and her eyes widened. Then she smiled. "You should have known I'd say yes, Jazz. I love you."
He looked at her. "I wanted it to be special."
"Why?"
He smiled. "Because loving you was never enough. I knew that when I met you. I knew I wanted to be with you for the rest of my life."
Alice pulled his mouth to hers and smirked against his lips. "So what are you going to do next year? What's bigger than a proposal?"
"Maybe I'll buy you a puppy," he whispered.
"We can't have a pet. I might kill it," Alice said.
Jasper grinned broadly. "You haven't killed Bella yet."
Alice rolled her eyes and kissed him again.
He laughed. "Happy Birthday, Alice."
