Description Holy shit that's fast.... though it did slowly drop to 550kb/s and then move back up to like 650kb/s but apparently this download actually started around 6000kb/s.... and that's apparently impossible... sometimes I really love Linux.

what speed modem do you use, the fastest download that has been managed is in the gigabytes regions

Internet2 land speed record

On November 9, 2004 a team consisting of the University of Tokyo, Fujitsu Computer Technologies, and the WIDE Project (all Japan), successfully transmitted 541 gigabytes of data across 20,645 km (12,828 miles) of network in ten minutes. The resulting value of 148,850 terabit-meters per second was accomplished using IPv4.

pretty impressive huh, imagine how many films you can download with that

holy shit, that's insane... and on the matter of downloading films.... that's something I've yet to try, as I don't actually use the pc with Linux on it that much.... but I'm looking forward to being able to get films in under 10mins.... will be quite fun really

That's firefox making a mistake, when the download window pops up e.g. save to desktop? It automatically starts downloading to temporary files but deletes the temporary file if you hit cancel. It works out your speed by bytes/time and it only starts the times when you hit ok so therefore, it you wait a while on 'Save to desktop?' Firefox will tell you the download's going fasted than it really is until the bytes/time averages to a normal number.

As the owner of said Linux system, It's not only firefox that is able to get these speeds I have been able to get speeds in excess of 1500KB/s using the Synaptic Package manger.

The explantion that I and many optus techs are providing is this: About a month ago our internet connection was all of a sudden becomming very unstable and cutting out every couple of hours, naturally once we were sure there wasn't anything we could do to fix the problem from here, we called optus and they ended up sending out a tech to the house - who used various tools and such to test the modem and the 3 boxes on the side of the house that run our connection all readings were normal bar a signal reading - when we should have been getting 10 something or other, we were only getting 4, and other connections on the street were getting similar issues except for one... Coinsidently this one house happens to be the Local member for Parliament... nothing suss hey. With in a week our connection issuse had been fixed, but not only that - we had inadvertantly been blessed with a very nice amount of bandwidth, windows XP was getting very nice speeds, but nothing over 1500KB/sec, then one day I decided to try out the new linux distro "Mandriva 2006" (basicly Mandrake) and nearly fell off my chair when i saw the speed hit 2400KB/sec when downloading ATI graphics drivers. Amazed by this I started looking at froms all over the web to see I could find some logical explantion, I eventually cam to the conclusion that the Linux TCP/IP ptorocol is written FAR better than Micro$oft Windoze Xp, which would explain why it was getting that much higher than Xp but it didn't explain why was getting those speeds in the first place, and I once again called optus to ask about this "interesting theory" I had thought up never mentioning my name or addres they did eventually get me on the phone to someone who knew what they were talking about who told me it was very possible for me to be getting those speeds on Optus Cable Internet - considering the singnal issues from the earlier months.

I will forever cherish these speeds, and I have been taking great advantage as later on this week I will be installing the 3rd linux distro on my computer Gentoo which is know for it's performance, so keep your eyes open and we'll see if we can get some better speeds happening

Oh, I thought you meant you were getting a speed impossible on your connection.

My connection is 256kb/s but in the error I outlined in the above comment, I can get speeds of >500kb/s.
