DevolutionChapter 1
‘’As the sun rises up over the lifeless corpse of the city, the crows screech out in torrent, their distinct bran of philosophical preaching. An unspoken warning, only ever falling on deaf ears. As they try in vein to alert us to the oncoming of an Armageddon. You can all but taste the death in the air. What with the overflowing sewers and the pungent stench of rotting flesh. The city being the corpse, as we the maggots ravage away at the surface, slowly borrowing deeper, forever scaring it changing it beyond all recognition. As our fathers did and their fathers before them, just being in this place… a middle of nowhere, on the edge of hell, slowly slipping over into the void… Damn this city depresses me.’’
‘’Huh? You say something?’’
‘’Never mind. Hmm. Damn how long have we been here? I have cramp in my ass.’’
‘’He’ll be here, just relax Devlin.’’
‘’It’s hard to relax when your ass is on fire.’’
Two figures sat in wait, housed in a rusty old van, one male and one female. The number plate, hanging off the front read ‘D3V 1ANT’. The van was varying colours of blue and red with patch body work and a black bonnet. The windows tinted and the chrome that lined the chunkiness of the vans dented exterior bounced off the rising suns rays. Across the street was a large seemingly abandoned warehouse. It didn’t look to have been used in many years and was very rundown. Drug users and squatters would probably think twice before setting up residence here. All the windows were either boarded up or smashed and graffiti decorated its exterior walls. It was probably just home to thousands of rats now.
Down the street, what looked to be a large dog of some description jumped up at a bin, moving frame by frame in the smog until the bin tipped under the weight of the animal, hitting the ground with an echoing bang, startling it into running away.
A figure emerged from the smog. A hood was pulled up of the head and all facial features indistinguishable. Walking hurriedly hugging the wall, the figure checked every direction as if to make sure of not being watched or followed. As the figure drew closer, a cigarette was the only defining detail that could be seen. It took a drag, the ‘cherry’ not being bright enough to light the face. Then an expel of cigarette smoke, an expel of worry, the worry was just a thought, the thought of it being the last cig. The last breath. The last heartbeat…
The figure eventually stopped at a large metal door in the side of the warehouse, knocked three times then disappeared inside to the deafening sound of the metal door being slammed behind.
‘’He’s here, lets roll,’’ said the male who answered to the name of Devlin.
The two figures emerged from the van and crossed the street. The male was wearing a full length black leather coat. There was a tight black top underneath, with matching black pants and shin high chunky boots. He had an ornate staff on his back attached to a harness which protruded out of a specifically cut hole in the back of his coat. The harness was attached to a studded belt brandishing a red and black grinning devil face belt buckle. The harness ran diagonally from his shoulder across his chest to his belt and the same across his back. With every step his long black hair blew across his face, as if it were hiding his identity. His hair was shaven at the back and spiked out. He looked to be in his mid 20’s. Down by his sides hanging off holsters on his belt were two semi-automatic pistols, they too like the staff ornate, with meat cleaver style blades running from barrel to butt.
The female wore a similar style coat, but this time it was brown and only three quarters long, with patches running down the sleeves. Underneath she was wearing a small black dress, with stripped black and white tights with holes in and chunky black boots. She brandished two double barrel shot guns which were perched snugly on a harness, which crossed over on her back. Her red hair was shaven at the sides and spiked up in the middle, shorter at the back and longer at the front, but still leaning to one side. She wore a set of metal goggles on her head and looked to be in her early 20’s. She looked wiser than her years. She was smaller in size compared to the male only reaching his shoulders but walked like she was 6 foot tall.
They walked the length of the building towards the large metal door, studying as they walked.
‘You think their hungry Eddie?’’ asked Devlin.
‘’Yeah I think so,’’ came the reply.
Devlin took out his staff and jumped up above the door, using his staff to pull himself up by laying it horizontally on two extruding metal bars, what looked to have been a sign at one time. He turned around so his back was against the wall and his arms behind him gripping the staff. Then he raised his legs, they too were against the wall, like a swimmer at the side of a pool. He nodded.
Eddie knocked three times. Then a panel on the door slid open, revealing two dark eyes.
‘’What the fuck you want?’’ asked the eyes.
‘’Pizza delivery,’’ answered Eddie.
‘’We didn’t order no pizza!’’ It bellowed.
‘’Look man, don’t fuck me around, it’s paid for so you want it or not? No big deal to me.’’
The eyes studied Eddie for a moment then the panel closed. Then a click and a loud screech as the door swung open outwards. Eddie took a step backwards to evade being smacked in the face by the door. Out stepped a large brutish figure. It had a shaven head, big black eyes and had many piercing’s. It was wearing large black sports pants with a silver stripe running down each leg at the seam, and no top. Its upper torso was covered in tattoos and its bulging muscles flexed as it stretched.
It stared at Eddie for a moment before finally speaking again.
‘’Where’s the pizza?’’ it quizzed.
‘’You big dumb fuck!’’ Eddie beamed at it.
At that moment Devlin jumped down from his perch and smashed the large figure on the back of the head before landing on his feet behind the falling hulk. Its skull was split in two, revealing all his innards. As the head hit the floor its bottom jaw hit the concrete hard, snapping the mouth closed and teeth and blood sprayed out in a 180 degree arc. Thus covering Eddie’s boots.
‘’Fuck! I hate it when that happens!’’ screeched Eddie.
Eddie kicked what was left of the head, first making a cracking then a squelching sound. She removed the end of her boot to reveal ‘spaghetti’ covering the toe end of her boot. She shook her foot and it flew off, hit the wall then slid down to come to rest next to a tooth lying on the ground against the wall.
‘’Lets get the body inside quickly,’’ said Devlin.
‘’What’s left of it’’ grinned Eddie, ‘’Velo demons are so fucking retarded. He must have been the dumbest yet.’’
They disappeared inside, closing the huge metal door behind them. Inside they were in a corridor, doors on the left and right, staggered, some of them completely torn off.
‘’I wonder if their hiring?’’ joked Devlin.
They continued down the hall, checking each room as they went, until they came to the end. Eddie pressed her back against the wall and peered around the corner.
‘’Two maybe three more Velo demons, armed. They seem to be guarding a big door to the left’’ she whispered.
‘’Right, you wanna do the honours or shall I?’’
‘’Me!’’ squealed Eddie.
She ran forward pulling out one of her shotguns as she went, aiming at the closest demon. As she got close she squeezed the trigger and with boom, a shower of shrapnel ripped through two guards, taking them both out in one go. The bullet clusters ripped through their flesh, shredding them and the surrounding area. Leaving the walls covered with little holes and splatters of blood. They never had a chance.
The third guard she smacked in the face with the butt of her gun whilst reloading it. His nose burst open and he began coughing on his blood before spitting out four front teeth. She continued to beat him first with the butt of the gun, then with her chunky boots as he slid to the floor, leaving a perfect size 6 in his face.
‘’Now that’s what I call a first impression’’ she laughed.
She to busy admiring her hand work to notice a fourth guard creep up behind her. He unsheathed a large sword that hang by his waist and raised it above her head.
‘’Don’t think so shit head!’’ Devlin whispered in his ear, and then slit his throat with the blade on one of his pistols. His skin gradually peeled open, spraying Eddie from behind with neck blood. He slumped to the floor snagging his hair as he went, snapping his head back and ripping the wound further to reveal his spine. It looked like an onion on a cannibalistic pizza.
‘’Not again! Why do I always get covered in blood?’’
‘’Ha-ha, you should have been more careful, three guards?’’
‘’Hey it’s not my fault! He probably went to take a leak or have a smoke.’’
‘’Yeah well, lets keep moving, theirs bound to be more of them around.’’
They entered through the large door into a dark room. It was lit only by a solitary light directly in the middle. The light cast not quite reach the walls. Directly under the light was a large table with people sat around on wooden chairs. The room was very smoky, and visibility was minimal.
‘’Stay back’’ whispered Devlin to Eddie.
‘’Why?’’
‘’No time, just do it, stay low’’ he whispered.
They all squinted to see who was stood before them before Devlin took a step forward revealing himself. He drew his staff and glanced at them each in turn.
‘’Right, no one fucking move!’’ he bellowed.
‘’Ah, Mr Strider I presume. We’ve been expecting you.’’ Said a large demon sat at the head of the table. He was covered in silver jewellery and dressed in what looked to be very gothic attire. Devlin couldn’t make out what he was to begin with. He took a step forward and took a deep breath through his nose. He’d recognise that stench anywhere.
‘’A vampire? What would a vampire be doing hanging around Velo demons?’’ Devlin asked, directing his question back at the figure at the head of the table.
‘’That, Mr Strider, is the question now isn’t it? Allow me to introduce myself, I am Christen, the last remaining vampire of the Los Vamperos.’’
‘’Whatever, I’m here for the one they call Gaiden. A vampire if I’m not mistaken.’’
‘’Ah yes, he is among us. My right hand… man as it were ha-ha. But, he’s not for the taking bounty hunter!’’
‘’We’ll see about that.’’ Devlin was becoming increasingly infuriated by the cockiness of this vampire.
‘’I don’t like your tone! It was an honour meeting the lone warrior but now its time for you to die, I’m sorry if I’m being rather blunt but I hate pleasantries.’’ Retorted the vampire who seemed to be as infuriated with Devlin as Devlin was with him.
‘’Lone warrior, that’s what you call me now? Jeez’’ Devlin said to himself but loud enough for everyone to hear him.
Devlin jumped smashing the light above the table with his staff, sending the whole room pitch black.
Machine guns started in short sporadic bursts, lighting up the room like a night club. Eddie could just about make out Devlin, slicing up vampires one by one. Appearing and then disappearing with every burst fired. This lasted maybe 30 seconds then, silence.
Eddie’s nostrils filled with gun smoke, she squinted to no avail. Was Devlin ok? She was going to call out to him when he lit a flare and held it up. He looked at half of Eddies orange neon face, she was covered in blood. She didn’t look at all pleased but he focused his attention at the group sat around the table. Christen was gone and four Velo demons, riddled with bullets, were slumped like rag dolls, secreting blood over the table. It gathered around their lifeless bodies and flowed over the table onto the floor. Just a Velo demon and a vampire remained. Both injured. Devlin looked at the Velo demon and said:
‘’If I were you, I’d leave. NOW!’’
The demon staggered to his feet, clutching his arm and ran out the door.
‘’Right, Gaiden I presume?’’ Devlin asked.
‘’N..N…N… No that’s not me’’ it answered.
‘’We have a picture of you dick’’ mumbled Eddie, ‘’it says dead or alive, same bounty.’’
‘’For lying were taking you in dead, what do you say Eddie?’’ asked Devlin
Eddie nodded then walked out of the door they had entered through and picked up the sword one of the demon’s had dropped earlier.
‘’Hmm, silver. Nice’’ She grinned as she approached Gaiden. ‘’Naughty naughty boy’’ she cracked an even wider smile that seemed to stretch from ear to ear before swinging the sword vertically, chopping Gaiden’s head clean off. His body disappeared in a cloud of ash.
Devlin caught the head as it fell and quickly sprayed it with Silver Spray hanging off his belt, before pushing it into a special ‘Head Bag’ containing preserving gel. The blue gel oozed over the head, then Devlin’s fingers but remained inside the bag as he retracted his digits.
‘’Too easy’’ said Devlin.
‘’Hmm… how did you see those Vampires?’’ she quizzed.
‘’Lucky guess I suppose.’’
But Eddie wasn’t convinced. Ever since she’d first met Devlin just over a year ago she knew he wasn’t quite right. The way he never got sick, hardly ever got injured and when he did how quickly he healed. Not days or weeks, but minutes and hours. She had thought he had some kind of sixth sense, but thought maybe; just maybe it was something more. Today had confirmed to her there was something very different about him. That was one of the reasons she stayed with him, he intrigued her, as she, intrigued him.
‘’Wait a minute!’’ She said turning to leave, ‘’Lone warrior?’’
‘’Yeah I don’t like it either.’’
‘’But your not lone. How the fuck can anyone not notice me!?’’
‘’Ha-ha, true! Sometimes Eddie, just sometimes, that’s the problem. C’mon, lets go get paid.’’
They walked outside and got in the van, throwing their equipment in the back. Devlin started the engine, scaring some birds further down the road and watched as they raced off. On the way back to the Bounty Office Devlin tried to remember the Los Vamperos. Devan, Ados, Neffan, Ferral and Christen where the original members. Why was Christen back? What business did he have with Velo demons? They weren’t special in anyway, just your usual lowlife demon scum. Enhanced strength, limited teleportation skills and incredibly dumb. Maybe he was reading too much into it he thought, probably just hired muscle. Then again, what did he mean he was expecting him?
