Description A lot of ninja turtle fans probably started back during the "cowabunga" days of the cartoon. I was lucky enough to become a fan during the original black & white comic run in the '80s. I remember at the time, basically for me I was get the Joe & Transformers comics...an occasional Spidey or Hulk comic. But then came across that weird looking black & white turtle book. Back then, they were reprinting the first few issues like crazy, since they were selling out and hard to come by. I think I probably started around issue 9 and then grabbed as many reprints to get caught up. And instantly I was hooked. Gritty art, cool villains...it made waiting for the next issue tough, as I'd get them at a magazine shop the few times I'd go downtown to eat. Ah memories!

Anyways here's a bunch of characters that just sorta sprung to pen today. Wanted to do a more realistic turtle (and it ended up unintentionally looking like a stand-in for Kung Fu Panda). Got a Foot Soldier in there, Shredder (that "Return To NY" storyline still to me is the peak that the comic got to), Casey Jones, and a Triceraton Commando. I even liked the two different headbands they'd use...that full skulled one they work when they were briefly seen as "pre-teenage", and then the normal short mask they wore the rest of the time.

I feel very lucky to have gotten the chance to do some work for Mirage Studios. That frontispiece was a lot of fun. But at that time, my style was still a bit stiff. Wish I'd get another shot cuz I'd love to do something a bit more animated.

I got into the Turtles with the Cowabunga days but I recently had a chance to see some of the early stuff and I gotta say I love it all. Your take on all these guys is fantastic

Thanks! It seems like the perfect kind of property where anyone can jump into it from any medium.

When I first saw the TMNT comic I said "That is never gonna last."

One of my bigger bad calls.

I could very easily see this style of art on a Turtle book. Very cool!

Well I'm sure most people originally thought turtles being ninjas were crazy. And they were right...but it's continued for a long time

Great stuff man. Yeah I'm one of those "Cowabunga" kids. I had the turtle van and everything.

It wasn't until I met Jesse that I actually read some of those old comics, Good stuff!

It's kinda funny when I think back to those days, because after getting mostly all those toys, imo the best toy they had was the "Slash" toy, which was that spiked shelled turtle with the eye patch.

Yeah I forget why they did that character other than to probably sell toys. heh

I'm a huge fan of the first volume of Mirage stuff. I still have every issue that Eastman and Laird did together. Just one of those things that I'll never part with. It's all about the red headbands.

yeah, fan of the og turtles too. they were all about the stealth back then.

the franchise just refuses to die, even after each new wave pitters out, another version comes crawling out of the sewers and into the mainstream. i mean, turtles-fast forward? i mean really...

Yeah it's a brand that finds a way to continue, that's for sure. I wonder what it'll look like in another 20 years.
